Job description

Future Director of Construction | Leadership Opportunity

Structural Components Fabrication (SCF) | Paragon, Indiana

Senior Project Manager — Structural Steel

Future Director of Construction | Leadership Opportunity

Structural Components Fabrication (SCF) | Paragon, Indiana

Full-Time | Salaried | Relocation Assistance Available

Build Something Bigger Than Your Next Project.

At Structural Components Fabrication (SCF), we believe great companies are built by people who take ownership, challenge the status quo, and genuinely care about the people working alongside them.

We're a growing commercial steel fabrication company in rural Paragon, Indiana, with a mission to Build the Communities Around Us. We fabricate structural and miscellaneous steel for commercial construction projects, and we're building a company known for its speed, quality, integrity, and ability to solve problems that others can't.

We're looking for an experienced Senior Project Manager with at least 10 years in the structural steel industry who wants more than another job managing projects.

We're looking for someone who wants to help build a department, develop a team, influence the direction of a growing company, and potentially step into the role of Head of Construction within the next 2–3 years.

This is an opportunity for someone who wants a seat at the table and is willing to earn it.

What Makes SCF Different?

We operate a little differently than most construction companies.

We're fast. Really fast. Our team is constantly solving problems, adjusting priorities, and finding ways to get things done better than we did yesterday.

We don't believe in micromanagement. We hire capable people, trust them to make decisions, and expect them to take ownership.

We also believe that work should be about more than collecting a paycheck.

Our employees are partners in building this company. We share meals, celebrate wins, welcome families into our workplace community, and make a deliberate effort to ensure people feel valued and included.

We believe in transparency, accountability, and treating people like people.

And we're doing all of this in the countryside of southern Indiana, away from the traffic, congestion, and constant rush of a major city.

If you're someone who enjoys small town values and big time goals, values independence, and wants to do meaningful work with good people, this opportunity might be exactly what you're looking for.

What You'll Be Responsible For

You’ll initially take ownership of commercial structural and miscellaneous steel projects from contract award through completion, while progressively helping build and lead SCF's project management operations.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Manage multiple commercial steel fabrication projects simultaneously, overseeing budgets, schedules, contracts, subcontractors, and customer expectations.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for general contractors, erectors, detailers, and other project stakeholders.
  • Anticipate challenges, resolve conflicts, and keep projects moving without waiting for someone else to provide direction.
  • Negotiate contracts, manage change orders, and protect project profitability.
  • Provide field direction and coordinate with erection subcontractors to resolve jobsite challenges.
  • Review estimates and support project handoffs from estimating to execution.
  • Mentor and coach developing project managers, delegating responsibilities that help them grow.
  • Identify inefficiencies, improve processes, and implement systems that make our entire operation stronger.
  • Collaborate with estimating, purchasing, detailing, and production to ensure projects move smoothly through our facility.
  • Help develop the structure, accountability, and processes of a growing project management department.

Within your first year, you could reasonably expect to begin taking on direct reports and greater departmental leadership responsibilities.

Our longer-term vision is for the right person to grow into Head of Construction, overseeing project management, estimating, and business development while participating in SCF's leadership team and strategic planning.

This is a development path, not an automatic promotion. Your performance, leadership, and ability to build a successful team will determine how that opportunity evolves.

Who We're Looking For

Required:

  • 10+ years of experience in the structural steel industry, preferably with a steel fabricator or erection contractor.
  • Substantial experience managing commercial construction projects and coordinating multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication, erection, sequencing, drawings, and construction schedules.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project financials, contracts, change orders, and subcontractor relationships.
  • Confidence making decisions independently and knowing when to ask for input.
  • Strong communication skills, including the willingness to raise concerns early and address difficult conversations directly.
  • Comfort using modern software, including practical working proficiency with AI tools.

Preferred:

  • Experience leading, mentoring, or developing other project managers.
  • Experience with Tekla EPM, Bluebeam, and Excel.
  • A history of implementing systems or improving operational processes.
  • Experience reviewing estimates, negotiating contracts, and supporting business development.
The Personality That Thrives Here

We're looking for someone whose natural response to a challenge is, "I've got this."

Someone who sees a problem and starts looking for a solution.

Someone who can move quickly without sacrificing judgment, stay composed when priorities change, and recognize when the team needs additional support.

Someone who can admit when they're overwhelmed, ask for help without ego, and have honest conversations before small problems become big ones.

Someone who understands that leadership isn't about having all the answers. It's about helping the team find them.

Our pace is demanding, and our expectations are high. But you'll have the freedom to lead, the support of a team that genuinely cares, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact.

What We Offer
  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience and leadership capability.
  • Profit-sharing opportunity.
  • Unlimited PTO under our salaried employee policy.
  • Health insurance.
  • Life insurance.
  • Short- and long-term disability insurance.
  • Employer contributions toward dental, vision, and other cafeteria-plan insurance options.
  • Retirement plan with company match.
  • Company-provided lunch once a week.
  • Monthly company Round Up party with meal provided and families welcome to join.
  • A collaborative, casual, high-accountability work environment.
  • Meaningful opportunity for leadership advancement.
  • Relocation assistance for qualified candidates.
Where You'll Work

SCF is located in Paragon, Indiana, in a quiet rural setting southwest of Indianapolis.

This is primarily an office-based leadership position with regular visits to jobsites throughout the region, generally within approximately two hours of our facility. Overnight travel is not normally required. Some scheduling flexibility may be available for the right senior candidate.

If you're tired of fighting traffic, navigating corporate politics, or feeling like another number in a large organization, you may find something different here.

Ready to Build With Us?

We're not looking for someone who wants to maintain the status quo.

We're looking for someone who wants to build a team, improve a company, and create something they're proud to be part of.

SCF is an equal opportunity employer. Employment decisions are based on qualifications, experience, and job-related capabilities.
