Job description

About The Opportunity

Are you an experienced project manager who wants more ownership, more influence, and a clear path to leadership? At Summit City Steel Erection (SCSE), you won't just manage projects from the sidelines. You'll take ownership from estimating and purchasing through field execution, customer relationships, and final closeout.

We're looking for a hands-on, solutions-oriented professional who understands steel, construction, fabrication, or industrial work and is ready to take the next step in their career. You'll work directly with company leadership, make meaningful project decisions, and help shape the future of our project management team.

You don't have to know everything on day one. We provide training on our software, erection practices, and required safety certifications.

Why Join SCSE?
  • Own your projects. Lead estimating, purchasing, budgeting, scheduling, and execution with the authority to make decisions within your project budget.
  • Build your career. Grow into a leadership role overseeing project managers, project engineers, and detailers.
  • Work directly with leadership. Have a direct line to the President overseeing our structural and industrial operations.
  • See your work come to life. Help plan and execute structural steel erection projects on commercial building sites and in industrial facilities.
  • Be part of a hands-on team. We own our equipment fleet and self-perform our work, giving you greater control over project execution.
  • Work from a new headquarters. Join us at our brand-new office in southwest Fort Wayne.

At SCSE, safety, quality, and productivity work together. We believe in planning well, solving problems early, and delivering work our customers can count on.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive base salary of $120,000–$160,000, based on experience.
  • Profit-sharing opportunities.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Paid time off established in your offer, plus paid holidays.
  • Company truck and fuel.
  • Company-provided phone and laptop.
  • PE license expenses reimbursed under a retention agreement, with study time provided.
  • Training on company software, erection practices, and job-required safety certifications.
What You'll Do
Project Ownership & Estimating
  • Manage projects from the initial customer conversation through design coordination, construction, and closeout.
  • Visit jobsites, define project scope, prepare estimates, and develop customer proposals.
  • Estimate structural steel erection, labor, and equipment requirements using bid documents and project specifications.
  • Manage project budgets, supplier quotes, purchasing, purchase orders, and change orders.
  • Monitor labor hours, costs, profitability, and schedules to keep projects on track.
Engineering & Project Planning
  • Review structural, shop, and erection drawings to identify conflicts, missing scope, and potential construction challenges before work begins.
  • Develop erection plans covering sequencing, structural stability, crane picks, equipment, and crew requirements.
  • Coordinate connection design and technical solutions in-house or with outside engineering resources.
  • Review drawings and coordinate lift planning for metal building and crane projects.
  • Identify practical solutions that improve safety, efficiency, and constructability.
Field Execution & Customer Relationships
  • Serve as the primary customer contact, providing updates and resolving project issues.
  • Coordinate plans with superintendents, foremen, general contractors, and plant personnel.
  • Schedule work around construction milestones, plant operations, and industrial shutdown windows.
  • Develop job safety plans and coordinate with safety and quality leadership.
  • Build long-term customer relationships and generate repeat business.
  • Provide after-hours support when urgent customer or plant issues arise.
What We're Looking For

We're interested in people who can take ownership, think critically, and get the job done. Your experience may come from structural steel, fabrication, welding, manufacturing, industrial maintenance, engineering, or construction project management.

You should bring:

  • Experience managing projects from start to finish, including scope, cost, scheduling, and customer communication.
  • A background in steel fabrication, welding, erection, or industrial work.
  • Technical experience with drawings, design, estimating, quoting, or welding and quality requirements.
  • The ability to read and interpret structural and shop drawings.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify problems before they become costly issues.
  • Independent problem-solving skills and sound decision-making.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for customer proposals, RFIs, change orders, and project coordination.
  • A valid driver's license and residence within approximately two hours of Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Don't meet every qualification? Apply anyway.

You do not need to come from a steel erection company, and a degree, specific software experience, or safety credentials are not required at hire. We're willing to train the right candidate.

Preferred Qualifications

Highly Preferred but not all are required

  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).
  • 7+ years experience working in steel mills, heavy industrial facilities, structural steel erection or fabrication experience.
  • Estimating, bidding, or quoting experience.
  • CAD or solid modeling experience, including AutoCAD or SolidWorks.
  • Familiarity with AWS D1.1, AISC standards, or OSHA Subpart R.
  • An engineering degree, passed FE exam, or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Hands-on experience as an ironworker, welder, fitter, or other field or shop professional.

This position offers the opportunity to expand beyond individual project management and help build a stronger project delivery team.

As you grow with SCSE, opportunities may include:

  • Taking on more advanced engineering and connection design responsibilities.
  • Expanding into shop drawings and detailing.
  • Leading project managers, project engineers, and detailers.
  • Pursuing a PE license with company support.
How Success Is Measured

You’ll be evaluated on the results that matter to our customers and our business:

  • Achieving project profit margin goals.
  • Delivering projects on schedule.
  • Building strong customer relationships and securing repeat business.

This is an office-based position at our Fort Wayne headquarters, with regular jobsite visits based on project needs.

  • Work on commercial building sites and inside operating mills and industrial plants.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) on jobsites.
  • Participate in occasional overnight travel and night or weekend work during industrial shutdowns.
  • Be able to climb ladders, stairs, and structural steel; work at heights with fall protection; walk on uneven surfaces; and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Work in varying conditions, including heat, cold, noise, and dust.
  • Complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
Ready to Take Ownership of Your Next Career Move?

If you're ready to lead challenging projects, work directly with company leadership, and build a long-term career with room to grow, we'd like to hear from you.
