Job summary

Energy Vault in Japan seeks a Senior Project Engineer to manage, optimize design, and lead the execution of BESS projects. You will collaborate with project managers, customers, vendors, AHJs, and consultants while documenting scalable processes and products.

Open to Lead or Principal roles for senior candidates. The candidate should be fluent in Japanese and English, have 10+ years in project design leadership, 5+ years in BESS, and 3+ years in EPC, with travel up to 30% and PE certification

Qualifications

  • Fluent in Japanese and English
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (electrical or power system) or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of leading project design in large power stations or utility-scale projects
  • 5+ years of BESS project experience (preferred)
  • 3+ years on EPC projects
  • PE certification or equivalent (preferred)
  • Familiarity with permitting processes with local authorities
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 30%

Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for project execution with clear scope, schedule, and stakeholders
  • Identify gaps in scope and responsibility and address them for project success
  • Apply engineering principles and consult SMEs to drive solutions
  • Specify equipment (Transformers, Switchgear, protection) as required
  • Interface with internal and external stakeholders for clear communication
  • Review design documents (single line drawings, diagrams, layouts)
  • Plan and lead BESS project commissioning
  • Provide feedback to improve internal processes and products

Your Impact as a Senior Project Engineer - Japan:

We seek an experienced Project Engineer, BESS Projects to manage, optimize design and lead the execution of Energy Vault BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) projects in Japan. In this role, you will collaborate with project managers, construction managers, customers, outside vendors, AHJ and consultants. As we rapidly grow and deliver on more contracts worldwide, you will help document and build scalable processes, technology, and products. Energy vault operates as both an independent power producer (IPP) and an integrator for customer projects.

We are targeting a Senior Project Engineer, but for a great candidate with more experience, we are open to a Lead Project Engineer or a Principal Project Engineer.

Your Mission:
  • Be responsible for project execution, which requires thorough understanding of scope, schedule, stakeholders and keeping all parties in sync.
  • Identify gaps in scope & responsibility and work with stakeholders to address them to ensure project success. This will require a comprehensive understanding of the engineering, procurement, construction, and permitting process.
  • Apply engineering principles and consult subject matter experts, as needed, to identify issues & drive solutions on projects.
  • Specify equipment for projects as required, including Transformers, Switchgear, protection solutions, etc.
  • Interface with internal (project managers, product engineers, sales team) and external stakeholders (utilities, AHJs, contractors, end customers) to ensure consistent communication.
  • Review project design documents including single line drawings, communication diagrams, layouts, equipment test reports, etc.
  • Plan and lead BESS project commissioning.
  • Provide constructive feedback to improve internal processes and product.
Your Background:
  • Candidate should be fluent in Japanese and English
  • Candidate should have current work rights in Japan.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (electrical or power system engineering) or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of experience of leading project design, preferably in the building of large power stations or PV or other utility-scale power projects
  • 5+ years of BESS project experience, preferred
  • 3+ years of experience working on EPC projects
  • Knowledge of relevant electrical standards for BESS projects in Japan
  • PE certification or equivalent, preferred
  • Familiarity in permitting processes with local authorities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, up to 30%
  • Comfortable in fast-paced, rapid growth environments
