Job summary

Software Placement Group, SPG, Los Angeles, CA, seeks an experienced Senior Project Engineer for a major transportation and mass transit program. The role focuses on project controls, change management, cost tracking, and documentation across large-scale heavy civil work.

You will support leadership, review drawings and contracts, manage change orders and cost reporting, and coordinate with engineers, subcontractors, and owners to ensure compliance with plans and specs.

Location: Los Angeles, California | Schedule: Full-time, exempt, on-site (occasional travel may be required) | Compensation: $150,000–$180,000 base salary, depending on experience

Overview

A major transportation and mass transit infrastructure program based in Los Angeles, California is seeking an experienced Senior Project Engineer. This role sits within the project leadership team and carries significant responsibility for project controls, change management, cost tracking, contract administration, quality control, documentation, and project closeout on a large-scale heavy civil, rail, and transit construction effort.

What you'll do
  • Support the Project Manager and Superintendent in executing large-scale transportation and infrastructure projects
  • Review and interpret construction drawings, specifications, contracts, subcontracts, and project requirements
  • Track, prepare, review, and process Change Proposal Requests, Change Orders, Potential Change Orders, Owner Payment Applications, and Claims & Supporting Documentation
  • Identify changes in project scope and develop supporting documentation for additional compensation and/or schedule impacts
  • Monitor project costs and maintain accurate cost and production reports
  • Assist project leadership with cost forecasting and financial reporting
  • Analyze labor costs, quantities, production, and project performance
  • Prepare and maintain quantity tracking and production reports
  • Coordinate with field operations to verify installed quantities and completed work
  • Assist with procurement, subcontractor coordination, material tracking, and project documentation
  • Manage RFIs, submittals, drawing revisions, and other technical documentation
  • Research technical and quality control issues and coordinate solutions with project leadership
  • Verify completed construction complies with applicable plans, specifications, codes, standards, and contract requirements
  • Coordinate with engineers, subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, owners, and other stakeholders
  • Support project scheduling, progress tracking, and short-term planning
  • Maintain organized, current, and accurate project records
  • Manage and coordinate project closeout requirements
  • Track punch-list items, as-built documentation, warranties, testing records, and final turnover documentation
  • Provide technical and administrative support to project leadership as required
Required qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • 10+ years of construction industry experience
  • Experience working on large, complex construction or infrastructure projects
  • Strong understanding of construction contracts, plans, specifications, and project documentation
  • Experience with project cost tracking, change management, and financial reporting
  • Ability to analyze labor costs, quantities, production, and project performanceStrong understanding of construction project controls and contract administration
  • Ability to manage multiple project priorities and maintain detailed documentation
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with Project Managers, Superintendents, engineers, subcontractors, owners, and field personnel
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer visa sponsorship or transfer requirements
Preferred qualifications
  • Previous Field Engineer or Project Engineer experience
  • Heavy civil construction experience
  • Electrical contractor experience
  • Traffic and street lighting experience
  • Rail or mass transit construction experience
  • Experience working on major transportation programs
  • Experience with public agency construction
  • Design-Build project experience
  • Experience managing change orders and claims on complex construction projects
  • Strong understanding of project financials and cost forecasting
  • Experience with construction management and project controls software, including Procore, Primavera P6, Bluebeam Revu, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office Suite, document control platforms, and cost management/project accounting systems
  • Experience on large and complex infrastructure projects such as rail and mass transit, metro/light rail, transportation infrastructure, heavy civil construction, underground transit, tunnels and underground structures, stations and transportation facilities, electrical infrastructure, traffic and street lighting, utility infrastructure, public works, highway and roadway construction, airport infrastructure, design-build projects, and large public agency projects
Compensation and benefits
  • Base salary: $150,000–$180,000, depending on experience
