Our client is a fast growing developer of fully islanded microgrids that combine solar, battery storage, and gas peaking generation to power AI data centers in Texas, with no utility connection behind them. They are looking for a Senior Project Engineer to carry the technical delivery of each site from approved design through construction, commissioning, energization, and commercial operation. You will act as the owner’s technical authority in the field, working directly with the Engineer of Record, the EPC contractor, and equipment manufacturers to protect scope, schedule, and quality. Reporting to the Project Director, you are accountable for whether the plant is built correctly and on time.
This is the delivery seat. The engineering team defines the design and controls approach, and you turn it into operating infrastructure on a compressed timeline, serving a continuous, high density computing load.
What you will do
- Own the technical path of each project from early design through commissioning and commercial operation
- Coordinate the 30%, 60%, 90%, and IFC design packages across engineering firms, equipment manufacturers, the power offtaker, and owner’s engineers
- Build technical scopes of work and responsibility matrices, including reusable templates, for limited notice to proceed, EPC, and owner’s engineering work
- Maintain the project design basis, standard specifications, and a lessons learned library that improves every future deployment
- Support equipment selection and specification for battery storage, PV inverters, medium voltage switchgear, and balance of plant, and evaluate vendor proposals and engineering contracts
- Compare project cost estimates against the design basis and raise gaps before they turn into change orders
- Support technical diligence with Independent Engineers for project financing, and advise legal and commercial teams on technical questions
- Lead the islanded commissioning and energization sequence, including battery first grid forming startup, factory and site acceptance testing, energization, and final acceptance
- Hold the Engineer of Record and EPC accountable on scope, schedule, and quality, and review EPC contracts, specifications, studies, and IFC drawings
- Coordinate procurement logistics and site sequencing for inverter skids, batteries, switchgear, and balance of plant
- Track schedule against the COD target, surface risks early, and drive them to resolution
- Lead field troubleshooting and startup on the pilot site and across the broader program
- Enforce safety and quality standards through construction and commissioning
What you bring
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent field experience
- 7+ years delivering utility scale solar, battery storage, power generation, or comparable large infrastructure projects
- Direct ownership of construction and commissioning through COD on at least one project
- Ability to interpret EPC contracts, equipment specifications, study reports, and IFC drawings and to hold counterparties to them
- Working knowledge of NEC, NESC, IEEE, and NFPA standards as they apply to PV, battery storage, and MV/HV systems
- Exposure to MV and HV substation engineering
- Proven discipline managing scope, schedule, and milestones under tight deadlines
- Willingness to travel to remote Texas sites as projects require
- Meticulous attention to detail paired with a preference for speed and quick iteration
Preferred experience
- Commissioning of solar plus storage systems or microgrids
- Islanded, off grid, or behind the meter projects
- ERCOT or Texas project experience
- Owner’s side experience directing an EOR or EPC as the owner’s agent
- Familiarity with grid forming battery startup and protection in islanded operation
- A background in cultures that test the way they intend to operate, such as Tesla Energy, SpaceX, or similar
