Job summary

Kitchell seeks an experienced Project Engineer II / Senior Project Engineer (DOE) to join our Southern California Regional team in San Diego and build a long-term career at one of the most innovative building companies in the United States.

Provide CM services in support of the Sr. Project Manager and Owner’s Representative team over an Education Market Sector project with DSA oversight. This role requires strong coordination, cost control, and document management capabilities on site.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or Architecture preferred.
  • 3 to 6 years of related work experience in construction required.
  • Prior experience in the California Public Education Market sector is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a full understanding of the scope and interdependence of all contract documents.
  • Observe and record jobsite activity in accordance with required contractual frequency.
  • Manage effective document control mechanisms for the project to ensure that work is performed in accordance with contract documents.
  • Evaluate change order requests including design changes, specifications and drawing releases and report status.
  • Evaluate submittals of shop drawings, material data and samples and take appropriate action based upon contract specifications.
  • Review and process as‑built drawings to ensure that all changes during the course of construction are recorded.
  • Review the project schedule and assist the project manager in its maintenance as requested.
  • Manage the request for information process to facilitate the timely exchange of information between designer and contractor.
  • Assist the project manager in the maintenance of effective cost control mechanisms for the project.
  • Complete project close‑out requirements in accordance with contract documents.
  • Coordinate meeting agendas, prepare minutes and follow up on action items.
  • Utilize safe work practices and follow directives, policies and procedures to maintain a healthy and safe work environment.
  • Maintain effective and professional relationships with owners, architects, engineers and contractors.

Overview

Requirements
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or Architecture is preferred
  • 3 to 6 years of related work experience in construction required
  • Prior experience in the California Public Education Market sector is preferred
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of construction and engineering related processes, as well as industry practices is required
  • Knowledge of the roles and interdependence between the contractor, designer, owner, and construction manager is required
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to build and maintain effective interpersonal relationships is required
  • Proficient with the MS Suite of tools with exposure to other construction specific software like Bluebeam, Primavera P6, Procore, and/or BIM tools is strongly preferred
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical drawings and blueprints is needed
License and Certifications

Valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle record, free from suspensions or restrictions, is required.

Travel Requirements

This position is performed on location at the project site in San Diego, CA.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must regularly work in an office and/or construction environment. Conditions regularly include exposure to outdoor elements, hot/cold temperatures, wet conditions, noise, atmospheric conditions and cramped quarters. The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud. The employee must have the ability to manage a regional commute as project site changes.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must regularly sit, stand, walk, talk or hear and use hands to finger, feel and handle; frequently reach with hands and arms; occasionally climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee must frequently lift and/or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual base salary range for Project Engineer II is currently $80,000 - $99,000. The annual base salary range for Senior Project Engineer is currently $100,000 - $120,000. The Company’s salary ranges are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data. Individual pay is determined through interviews and an assessment of various factors, including job‑related skills, relevant education and experience, abilities of the applicant and equity with other team members. The annual base salary range listed here is subject to change at any time, in the Company’s discretion, and does not alter in any way the at‑will nature of the employment relationship.
