Job description

Renewable Energy | Solar & Battery Storage

Location: New York City

Employment Type: Full-Time

Reports To: VP of Development

About the Company

Our client is a growing U.S.-based renewable energy developer specializing in solar and battery energy storage systems (BESS). With an expanding pipeline across key U.S. markets, the company develops energy infrastructure designed to strengthen grid reliability, reduce energy costs, and support local communities.

The organization offers a collaborative, entrepreneurial environment where experienced developers have significant autonomy, direct exposure to senior leadership, and the opportunity to influence project strategy and financial outcomes.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Project Developer to independently manage front-of-meter solar and battery storage projects from origination and site control through Notice to Proceed (NTP).

The successful candidate will take full ownership of individual projects, including development strategy, land acquisition, permitting, stakeholder engagement, financial management, and risk mitigation.

This position requires a commercially minded developer who can independently navigate complex development challenges, make informed investment decisions, and deliver financeable projects on time and within budget.

Success will be measured by project profitability, execution quality, and successful project monetization rather than solely by megawatts developed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead solar and BESS development projects independently from origination through NTP.
  • Negotiate land leases, purchase agreements, easements, and other site control arrangements.
  • Manage local zoning, land use approvals, permitting, and regulatory requirements.
  • Build and maintain relationships with landowners, municipalities, regulatory authorities, and community stakeholders.
  • Coordinate engineering, finance, development operations, and other internal stakeholders to advance projects.
  • Manage project budgets, financial forecasts, development expenditures, and project economics.
  • Identify and mitigate development risks, including making recommendations to advance, restructure, or discontinue projects.
  • Prepare projects for buyer due diligence, financing, and capital partner transactions.
  • Maintain accurate development documentation, schedules, and project reporting.
  • Travel regularly to project locations and engage with stakeholders in person.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, Real Estate, Planning, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of development experience in renewable energy, infrastructure, or comparable real-asset development.
  • Demonstrated experience independently managing projects through complex development milestones.
  • Strong knowledge of land use, zoning, permitting, and discretionary approval processes.
  • Experience negotiating real estate agreements and resolving title or site control issues.
  • Proven ability to manage project budgets, financial performance, and commercial risk.
  • Experience working with municipalities and navigating challenging permitting jurisdictions.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, organizational, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously while coordinating cross-functional teams.
  • Willingness to travel regularly throughout active development markets.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience developing front-of-meter solar or BESS projects.
  • Experience advancing projects through NTP and preparing assets for sale or financing.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy incentives, market structures, and project economics.
  • Experience working within an independent power producer (IPP) or renewable energy development company.
  • MBA or relevant master's degree.
  • Experience in entrepreneurial or rapidly growing development organizations.

Base Salary: $140,000-$180,000 depending on experience.

Additional Compensation: Uncapped profit-sharing opportunities directly linked to successful project monetization.

Benefits include comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) with company matching, unlimited PTO, a two-week paid year-end office closure, paid family leave, disability coverage, and professional development opportunities.
