Job Description SENIOR PROJECT COST ESTIMATOR
Minimum Requirements
Required Experience/Skills:
- 10 years full-time paid professional experience in preparing complete cost estimates for Type I, II, III, and V buildings as defined by the State building code, including two years in a supervisory role.
- Knowledge of current local construction labor and material costs.
- Extensive experience in developing and estimating the scope of work for change orders.
- Ability to compare independent cost estimates with contractor proposals to quickly identify discrepancies.
- Ability to develop scope of work based on RFI/RFC responses and estimate detailed costs independently of contractor proposals.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
Required Education
- Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, or construction management from a recognized college or university.
Duties
- Plan, supervise, and participate in preparing construction cost estimates from drawings, outlines, and specifications.
- Prepare and review cost estimates and related materials for securing state and federal grants and loans, and represent the District in funding matters.
- Verify accuracy and completeness of estimates submitted by architects and engineers, comparing them with District estimates.
- Consult with architects and engineers to resolve discrepancies and negotiate preliminary cost estimates.
- Conduct studies and prepare reports on bid variations from estimates.
- Review and recommend acceptance or rejection of contract cost segregations for progress payments.
- Analyze change orders and approve or reject extras or credits.
- Develop and review project cost estimates.
- Establish procedures for plan and specification approval and public bidding.
- Maintain data systems reflecting estimated versus actual construction costs.
- Participate in seminars and workshops on bidding procedures, contracts, and cost estimating.
- Estimate damages to District property from disasters or vandalism.
- Set budgets for school building projects.
- Prepare preliminary and final independent cost estimates for negotiations.
- Prepare change order estimates for negotiation purposes.
- Support price negotiations and review contractor claims.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
