Job summary

Marathon Petroleum Corporation, Los Angeles Refinery, is seeking a Project Controls Specialist (Cost & Scheduler) to lead cost control and scheduling for capital and expense projects.

The role requires coordinating with project management, engineering, procurement, construction, and accounting to maintain budgets, schedules, and performance metrics. Onsite schedules include 9/80, 5/40, or 4/1, with occasional after-hours calls.

Qualifications

• Must have High School Diploma or GED and at least five (5) years of project controls experience in refining or petrochemical industry or a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or similar field with at least four (4) years of project controls experience.
• Must have both cost and scheduling experience.
• Must be proficient in Microsoft 365: Word, Excel and Outlook; working knowledge with Primavera P6.
• Must be self-motivated, able to work in a fast-paced environment, and possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and be legally authorized to work in the US without visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

• Prepares and manages project budgets, forecasts, and cost reports.
• Tracks actual costs against baseline budgets and analyzes variances.
• Implements cost control measures and recommends corrective actions.
• Supports development and upkeep of detailed project schedules using industry-standard software.
• Integrates scope, schedule, and cost data to support effective project execution.
• Identifies schedule risks and develops mitigation strategies.
• Applies earned value management (EVM) techniques to monitor project performance.
• Generates and interprets project performance metrics (CPI, SPI).
• Provides actionable insights to project teams and stakeholders.
• Identifies risks and opportunities and supports mitigation planning.
• Evaluates change controls and their impact on cost and schedule.
• Delivers progress reports, dashboards, and executive summaries.
