Job summary

City of Denton is seeking a Sustainability Program Manager to oversee daily operations within Environmental Services and Sustainability. You will design and implement programs, track metrics, and coordinate grant activities to advance environmental initiatives in city operations and the community.

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and several years of management or supervisory experience, with a strong emphasis on policy knowledge, stakeholder collaboration, and

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Sustainability, Environmental Sciences, Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in municipal or private, or related field; and,
  • Two (2) years’ experience in management or supervisory capacity; and,
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.

  • Manage assigned area operations and programs resources to ensure services meet regulatory and policy standards.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders to achieve environmental and sustainability goals and establish collaborative relationships.

DUTIES
  • Assist with the design, development and implementation of the sustainability program (city operations and community); evaluate current initiatives, research best practices, and recommend process improvement initiatives involving environmental, social, and economical efforts.
  • Ensure sustainability and resiliency are included in Citywide policies, practices and activities.
  • Track program metrics, report, and provide summaries, demonstrate program success; ensure continual program evaluation to maintain improvements over time.
  • Coordinate and research grant activities, including but not limited to, reporting, tracking and identification of future grant opportunities.
  • Manage and participate in community engagement activities to promote sustainability practices within city operations and in the community.
  • Research, design, and produce community engagement materials, presentations, and activities, including but not limited to, social media, websites, fliers, workshops, classes, and events to expand and enhance sustainability knowledge and involvement.
  • Manage assigned area operations and programs resources and ensure services are provided within standards pf applicable regulations, policies, and procedures; identify opportunities to improve service delivery or documentation.
  • Coordinate and engage with stakeholders to achieve environmental and sustainability goals; collaborate with City staff, community agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure the promotion, implementation, and success of all programs. Establish and maintain collaborative relationships.
  • Develop and implement team performance measures, priorities, work sequences, and report team and program performance; ensure adherence to regulatory/grant requirements.
  • Research processes, technologies, trends and legislation to improve departmental efficiency and effectiveness. Make recommendations for adoption and implementation.
  • Serve as liaison and/or representative at various meetings, including but not limited to, neighborhood, city council, board meetings, and Commission public hearings.
  • Manage contract development and completion for usage with vendors and stakeholders.
  • Oversee strategy-related decisions for outreach and communication, including but not limited to the website, blog, social media, and print materials; seek out public speaking, engagement, and writing opportunities to engage with city operations and the community.
  • Prepare and submit financial reports and budget information for revenues and expenditures, as appropriate.
SUPERVISORY/BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate staff; recommend assignment/assignment change, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor budget; maintain accurate budget reporting; ensure that operations are cost-effective, and funds are managed wisely.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law)
  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check and social security number verification.

SAFETY
  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment; ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing; operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Promptly report unsafe conditions in the work area and/or any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Safety Sensitive (Subject to random drug testing): Yes.
  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals.
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
  • Lifting: Lifting no more than 20 pounds and carrying up to 10 pounds.
  • Environment: Works in an office setting; occasionally requires irregular and/or prolonged hours.
  • Travel: Travels to City of Denton buildings and professional meetings as required.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position. Must be able to work outside normal business hours, as needed. Must be able to work overtime, as needed.
