Job summary

City of Denton Library seeks a customer-focused library assistant to provide desk coverage and direct assistance to internal and external customers on a variety of services, including circulation, reference, and basic computer help.

You will help patrons use MakerSpace and digital resources, process registrations and transactions, and support program outreach and publicity efforts in a busy library setting.

Qualifications

  • The candidate has a High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience in a library or related field is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance and instruction to library customers in person, over the phone, or by email.
  • Assist and instruct customers in use of library equipment and services including reader’s advisory, reference searches, and digital resources.
  • Register new library customers, update accounts, and check in/out materials.
  • Collect fees and process payments as needed.
  • Organize materials on shelves and maintain proper Dewey Decimal order.
  • Assist with programs, publicity materials, displays, and outreach.
  • Monitor returned materials and route to appropriate staff.

Job description

Responsible for providing desk coverage and assistance to library internal and external customers, including but not limited to, circulation, program presentation, information, and computer assistance services.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

DUTIES


  • Provide assistance and instruction to library customers in person, over the telephone, or by electronic mail.

  • Assist and instruct customers in use of library equipment and services, including but not limited to reader’s advisory, basic reference searches, online catalog, MakerSpace, digital collections, public computers, printers, and other library machinery.

  • Complete registration for new library customers, update library accounts and check in returned materials and assesses, and check out library materials, as appropriate.

  • Collect fees and process payments for items; accept cash, check, or card payments, as needed.

  • Organize and straighten materials on the shelves and maintenance of collections; ensure items are in proper order according to the Dewey Decimal System.

  • Assist with preparation and promotion of programs, classes, and services; assist with program outreach, as needed.

  • Prepare publicity materials, displays and bulletin boards.

  • Monitor the conditions of returned material; repair materials and route to proper area and/or staff member, as applicable.

  • Collect in-house statistics.

  • May supervise volunteers.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS


  • High School diploma or equivalent; and,

  • Two (2) years’ experience in library or related field,

  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.

  • Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws and regulations, as well as City of Denton policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of development and activities that are organized, age appropriate and maintain interest.

  • Skill at the intermediate level, working with Microsoft Office 365, and other software systems to complete work.

  • Skill in interpersonal relationships, including using tact, patience, and courtesy.

  • Skill in providing exceptional service to internal and external customers.

  • Ability to work independently to manage multiple work tasks while balancing competing priorities with attention to detail and in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and written forms, for the needs of the audience.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT


  • Must pass a drug test, criminal history background check, and social security number verification.

  • Must pass a physical examination.


SAFETY


  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment; ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.

  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.

  • Promptly report unsafe conditions in work area and/or any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.


WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Safety Sensitive (Subject to random drug testing): Yes.

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals.

  • Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; frequent, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting, including stooping below knee level and reaching above shoulder level.

  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse.

  • Hearing and Vision: Prolonged listening and viewing information to identify requested items.

  • Lifting:Liftingno more than 50 pounds;carryingup to 25 pounds.

  • Environment: Works in an office and library setting; occasionally requires irregular and/or prolonged hours.

  • Travel: Travels to City of Denton buildings and professional meetings as required.

  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.Must be able to work a rotating schedule including nights and weekends. Must be able to work overtime, as required.

  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
