Job summary

Penguin Random House Corporate Bookmaking is seeking a Production Editor to support the Crown Publishing Group. You will oversee a range of titles, collaborating with editorial, design, and production teams to move projects from manuscript to finished book.

The role involves hiring and guiding freelance editors, preparing initial transmittals, managing schedules, and ensuring on-time, high-quality output across nonfiction, cookbooks, picture books, and more. Hybrid work in NYC.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years of publishing experience in a production editorial capacity.
• Experience on a wide variety of books, including complex nonfiction and illustrated projects.
• Ability to set and meet deadlines.
• Ability to prioritize multiple assignments in a deadline-driven, fast-paced environment.
• Strong copyediting and proofreading skills.
• Knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Hire and assess freelance copy editors, proofreaders, cold readers, and indexers.
• Prepare and styling initial text transmittals using a Word-based platform.
• Coordinate with editorial, managing editorial, production, and design departments to finish titles.
• Manage schedules and updating project progress in File Maker Pro.
• Review and collate author and proofreader edits in Adobe Acrobat, including copyediting and fact-checking.
• Keep books on schedule and error-free under tight deadlines.
• Copyedit and proofread front matter, back matter, jacket and cover copy, promotional material, etc.
• Reviewing and approving jacket and cover routings.
• Overseeing the work of freelancers performing quality assurance reviews on e-books.
• Perform admin duties, including invoice processing, system updates, and status reports.
