Job summary

Macmillan Publishers in Austin is seeking a Senior Production Editor to manage the production editorial process for adult trade titles. You will edit 35-40 books per year, hire and supervise freelancers, and ensure quality control from manuscript to bound book.

You will oversee copyediting, proofreading, indexing, and jacket/copy, coordinating with Production, Design, and Editorial teams while meeting tight deadlines and upholding style standards.

Qualifications

• Seven to ten years of production editing experience in adult trade.
• Bachelor's degree or commensurate experience.
• Strong grammar and punctuation with Chicago Manual of Style expertise.
• Ability to manage freelancers and multiple books concurrently.
• Proficiency with digital copyediting, routing, and workflow systems.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Handle production editorial work from manuscript to bound book, including paperback conversions.
• Electronic styling of manuscripts for design and composition.
• Hire and review freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers across passes.
• Prepare copyedited manuscripts for design and typesetting.
• Collate changes in page proofs and resolve queries prior to transmittal.
• Copyedit jacket/cover copy and marketing material.
• Collaborate with Production, Design, and Editorial on scheduling and revisions, obeying Legal directives.
• Update progress in digital tracking systems with proper file naming.
• Provide support for other editors during vacations.
