Job summary

Macmillan Publishers seeks a Senior Production Editor for Macmillan Adult Trade to oversee the production editorial process across 35–40 books annually, or 15–25 at a time. You'll manage freelancers, ensure jackets/covers, proofs, and indexing are flawless, and enforce department procedures with a strong eye for quality.

The role requires proficiency with digital copyediting and workflow systems, and a deep knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style to balance rules with author voice.

Qualifications

• Extensive background in adult trade fiction and nonfiction requirements.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, prioritizing tasks.
• Excellent grammar and punctuation, adept with the Chicago Manual of Style.
• Meticulous attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.
• Experience meeting deadlines while juggling multiple projects.

Responsibilities

• Handle production editorial work from manuscript to bound book, including paperback conversions.
• Electronic styling of manuscripts for design and composition.
• Hire and review freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers across passes.
• Prepare copyedited manuscripts for design and typesetting; consolidate author changes.
• Collaborate across Production, Design, and Editorial to schedule and revise per feedback.
• Update project progress in digital tracking systems with proper file naming conventions.
• Provide coverage support for team members during vacations or discretionary days.
