Job summary

BiSN is seeking an experienced Product Development Engineer in Houston to own downhole tool designs from concept to commercialization. You will work hands‑on with our test facility, manufacturing partners, and field teams, delivering reliable, field‑ready tools for demanding downhole environments.

You will lead design reviews, perform engineering analyses, and mentor junior engineers while interfacing with suppliers to ensure robust, manufacturable solutions that meet safety and performance

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline.
• 8–10 years of downhole oilfield tool design experience with ownership of at least one tool from concept through field deployment.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred), large assemblies, configurations and drawing standards.
• Experience with pressure and temperature qualification testing of downhole equipment and GD&T.
• US work authorization; willing to travel 10–20% to field/test sites.

The Role

We are hiring an experienced Product Development Engineer to take ownership of downhole tool designs across BiSN's product lines. This is a hands-on design role with real autonomy: you will own projects end to end, from concept and feasibility through qualification testing, first field runs, and commercial release. You will work directly with our test facility, manufacturing partners, and field operations teams, and your designs will go downhole.

This is not a support role. We are looking for someone who has already put tools in wells and knows what that demands.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the design, development, and qualification of new downhole tools and systems from concept through commercialization.
• Lead design reviews and make design decisions that balance functional requirements, manufacturability, cost, and field operability.
• Author test plans, qualification protocols, and acceptance criteria; define what 'qualified' means for your tools and defend it.
• Perform engineering calculations and design analysis to validate concepts: pressure containment, thermal, stored energy, stress, and tolerance stack-up. FEA where analytical methods are insufficient.
• Create detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings with correct GD&T (SolidWorks preferred).
• Select materials and specify treatments appropriate to downhole service environments, including sour service and elevated temperature applications.
• Analyze and interpret test data; produce technical reports that drive design decisions rather than simply record results.
• Lead root cause investigations of lab and field performance issues and drive corrective actions to closure.
• Manage project schedules and budgets across design, procurement, manufacturing, and test phases; communicate risk and status to management early and clearly.
• Interface with suppliers and machine shops on design for manufacture, tolerancing, and inspection requirements.
• Provide technical support to field operations, including deployment procedures, running guidelines, and post-job analysis.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the technical growth of the team.
• Maintain engineering documentation, revision control, and product files in accordance with company standards.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• Minimum 8-10 years of downhole oilfield tool design experience. Candidates whose experience is in general mechanical design without downhole exposure will not be a fit for this role.
• Demonstrated ownership of at least one tool or product taken from concept through qualification and field deployment.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred), including large assemblies, configurations, and drawing standards.
• Working knowledge of GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis.
• Practical experience with pressure and temperature qualification testing of downhole equipment.
• Strong grounding in engineering fundamentals: stress analysis, pressure vessel calculations, sealing theory, and material selection.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write technical reports that stand up to customer and third-party scrutiny.
• Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without restrictions.
• Willing to travel to field or test sites, expected 10-20% travel

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with API and ISO qualification standards relevant to downhole barriers and completion equipment.
• Familiarity with well construction, completions architecture, and P&A operations.
• Exposure to energetic, thermal, or exothermic systems.
• FEA experience (SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS, or equivalent).
• Hands-on test facility experience: instrumentation, data acquisition, and pressure test operations.
• Field experience, including time on rigs or at wellsite.
