Job summary

Toast is seeking an experienced Product Counsel to join our Legal team. You will work with product, engineering, data science, marketing, compliance, and sales to understand Toast’s products, platform, and AI-driven strategies, and to provide pragmatic legal guidance that mitigates risk.

The role emphasizes technical fluency and collaboration across teams building the Toast platform and its enterprise offerings.

Qualifications

• J.D. and bar membership in good standing in at least one state
• 5+ years of legal experience in regulatory compliance, privacy, IP, and consumer protection
• In-house experience advising product, engineering, and marketing teams on new products and features
• Technical fluency: comfortable reading architecture/design docs, data flows, schemas, APIs, and model behavior
• Experience with AI or ML issues (training data rights, model governance, emerging AI regulation)
• Experience with data-use and data-rights questions and related contractual commitments
• Experience working with fast-paced technology companies
• Exceptional communication skills and ability to explain complex ideas succinctly

Responsibilities

• Advising across product development lifecycle from initial design to launch, including marketing strategies and assets
• Providing practical legal advice on regulatory compliance, consumer protection, IP, AI, marketing, and privacy
• Advising on design and deployment of core platform infrastructure and AI, including API design and data handling
• Counseling product, engineering, and data science teams across ML model lifecycle
• Advising on identity, authentication, authorization, and account security and related legal requirements
• Translating legal requirements into actionable technical guidance and reviewing design documents
• Staying up to date on US and international laws affecting the Toast platform and AI landscape
• Thinking creatively to navigate regulatory complexities for a smooth user experience
• Helping build scalable processes like playbooks and triage to resolve routine questions quickly
• Partnering with privacy, security, compliance, and other product counsel on cross-team issues
