Our client, a leader in the specialty chemicals manufacturing sector, seeks a Senior Process Chemist to join their R&D division in Queenstown, Eastern Cape. The role blends lab work, on-site process development, and remote collaboration to optimize existing processes and develop new routes.

Ideal candidates hold a PhD or MSc in Organic Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, with 5+ years in process chemistry, and strong skills in DoE, scale-up, and analytical methods (HPLC/GC/NMR/MS).

Qualifications

• PhD or MSc in Organic Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with a strong chemistry focus.
• Minimum of 5 years in process chemistry or chemical process development.
• Experience with organic synthesis, process optimization, scale-up.
• Proficiency with analytical techniques and quality control.
• Understanding of reaction engineering and thermodynamics.
• Familiarity with safety, REACH/GHS and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Develop, optimize, and scale up chemical synthesis processes.
• Conduct experiments on reaction mechanisms, kinetics, and parameters.
• Troubleshoot pilot plant and manufacturing processes.
• Design experiments using Design of Experiments (DoE).
• Analyze materials and products with analytical techniques (HPLC, GC, NMR, MS).

About the Role

Our client, a leader in the specialty chemicals manufacturing sector, is looking for a Senior Process Chemist to join their research and development division in Queenstown, Eastern Cape . This role is integral to optimizing existing chemical processes, developing new synthesis routes, and ensuring the efficient and safe production of high-quality chemical products. The successful candidate will possess a strong background in organic chemistry, process development, scale-up, and analytical techniques. This hybrid role allows for a balance between laboratory work, process optimization on-site, and remote collaboration and data analysis. Key Responsibilities

• Develop, optimize, and scale up chemical synthesis processes for new and existing products.
• Conduct laboratory experiments to investigate reaction mechanisms, kinetics, and process parameters.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues in pilot plant and full-scale manufacturing processes.
• Design and execute experiments using Design of Experiments (DoE) principles.
• Analyze raw materials, intermediates, and final products using various analytical techniques (e.g., HPLC, GC, NMR, MS).
• Ensure all processes are developed and operated in compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards.
• Collaborate with engineers, production staff, and other R&D chemists.
• Prepare detailed technical reports, process documentation, and patent applications.
• Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure adherence to good laboratory practices (GLP).
• Stay current with advancements in synthetic organic chemistry and process technology.

Requirements

• PhD or MSc in Organic Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with a strong chemistry focus.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in process chemistry or chemical process development within the chemical industry.
• Proven experience in organic synthesis, process optimization, and scale-up.
• Proficiency in analytical techniques for chemical characterization and quality control.
• Strong understanding of chemical reaction engineering principles and thermodynamics.
• Experience with process safety evaluations and hazard analyses.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team and remotely.
• Familiarity with regulatory requirements (e.g., REACH, GHS) is beneficial.
• Experience within the Eastern Cape region is an advantage.
