PGE seeks a Senior or Principal Risk Analyst with energy analytics, quantitative analysis, and fundamentals experience to analyze risk and develop actionable business intelligence for effectively navigating dynamic energy markets. This highly visible position will be at the forefront of modeling and analyzing the evolving future of the power sector and guiding the company’s approach to risks and opportunities related to energy infrastructure and market investments, with strong growth possibilities within the organization.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Leading Power Operations Risk Management by running and analyzing operational reports. Collaborating with Power Operations to assess trading risk limits and assessments. Developing new quantitative models, validating or enhancing existing models, and assisting internal partners and staff in understanding and utilizing these models for effective risk analysis and decision-making.
- Providing analytical support for trading, portfolio management, origination, energy market risk, credit risk, and finance; interpreting and sharing qualitative insights and feedback from commercial teams into quantifiable terms to help improve performance.
- Independently initiating and analyzing optimization in competitive markets, stochastic simulations, and the interactions between low-marginal cost resources and traditional energy generators.
- Identifying and implementing effective approaches to evaluate energy infrastructure benefits, costs, risks, and risk mitigation quantitatively.
- Designing complex valuation and pricing models for structured products, including tolling agreements, PPA agreements, load-following deals, shaped products, revenue puts, exotic options (swaptions, basket options, look-back options, heat rate options, etc.), weather derivatives, and unit contingency.
- Understanding risk metrics such as Value at Risk (VaR), Mark to Market, and Gross Margin at Risk (GMaR).
- Proposing and implementing portfolio and asset optimization frameworks, including generation asset optimization, natural gas storage and transportation, cross-commodity hedge optimization, and FTR hedging/bidding optimization.
- Leading quantitative research on macro industry trends, energy markets, ancillary services, capacity markets, and commercial activities using AI, machine learning, game theory, supply and demand models, probabilistic models, and option valuation tools.
- Providing statistical analysis and quantitative tools for trading and hedging, including market data modeling and ad hoc analysis of short-term market developments.
- Communicating modeling methodologies, analyses, and results effectively to diverse audiences, emphasizing the 'why'.
- Providing expert witness testimony for market and regulatory proceedings when needed.
- Making decisions within the framework of existing Risk Management Policies and Procedures.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering, statistics, science, economics, or finance.
- 3-4+ years of experience in a similar role within the energy industry.
- Broad background in energy and quantitative risk analysis in North America, focusing on power, natural gas, and renewables.
- Experience with wholesale power and/or gas markets and quantitative energy trading is preferred.
- Expertise in techniques such as time series analysis, advanced regression, econometrics, and optimization with commercial solvers.
- Strong communication skills.
- Experience with Production Cost Modeling.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Ability to collaborate across different organizational units.
- Experience with Endur ETRM is a plus.
