Job summary

Johnson & Johnson MedTech Surgery is seeking a Principal Engineer to join the R&D Innovation & Partnerships team at our Raritan, NJ site. You will shape next-generation surgical, wound closure, and digitally enabled systems by translating needs into architecture and leading feasibility and early development activities.

You will partner with cross-functional teams and external partners to drive due diligence, concept generation, and de-risking, ensuring smooth transition to product development

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in systems/related engineering discipline required.
• 8+ years in medical device R&D or related roles.
• Experience leading front-end innovation activities and product development transitions.
• Experience evaluating external technologies and partnerships with evidence-based recommendations.
• Knowledge of design controls, risk management, and regulated product development.
• Able to communicate complex technical and clinical information to senior leaders and teams.

Responsibilities

• Identify external technologies, platforms, and partnerships aligned to Surgery strategy.
• Conduct technical due diligence on startups, licensing, and collaborations.
• Develop technology landscapes and evidence summaries across surgical spaces.
• Translate insights into system requirements and architecture considerations.
• Engage clinicians and external partners to maintain a robust innovation pipeline.
• Lead front-end innovation activities from discovery to feasibility and prototype evaluation.
• Partner cross-functionally to advance opportunities through de-risking and transition to development.
• Prepare technical assessments and business cases for governance and investment decisions.
