Job description

GDS Associates, Inc. has an exciting and challenging opportunity with advancement and growth potential for an experienced professional to work in our Power Supply Planning group. This person will provide project management and analytical support with an emphasis on Pacific Northwest and Western power supply projects. GDS is a nationwide multi-service engineering and consulting firm specializing in the energy utilities industry. We have a significant and growing practice in the power supply planning area representing utility and developer clients in strategic procurement, planning, optimization, and effective management of power supply resources across the U.S.

Responsibilities:
  1. Work under minimal supervision, requiring strong mid-career-level experience in understanding complex power market issues.
  2. Prepare energy and capacity price forecasts, assess market fundamentals, analyze market design changes, and evaluate the impact of market rules on client planning functions.
  3. Evaluate supply resources economically and risk-wise with support staff.
  4. Oversee regional Pacific Northwest supply and modeling evaluations, especially post-2028 Tier 1 and Tier 2 power supply from BPA.
  5. Provide insights on regional market issues such as WEIM, EDAM, WRAP, and Markets+ to public power clients.
  6. Manage portfolio analytics and oversight for western supply planning clients, with opportunities for project integration.
  7. Support review of BPA rate cases based on supply and rate fundamentals understanding.
  8. Utilize industry models for detailed analytics.
  9. Contribute to consulting projects by creating spreadsheets and graphics, seeking peer review to ensure high-quality deliverables.
  10. Develop expertise in specific practice areas, staying current on hot topics to enhance knowledge.
  11. Communicate with clients via phone and presentations as part of team efforts.
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor's degree in engineering, statistics, economics, or related energy field; Master's preferred.
  2. At least 10 years of relevant experience in Pacific Northwest and western power markets, including BPA tiered supply and rates; familiarity with other markets is a plus.
  3. Knowledge of production cost models (e.g., GridView, Aurora, PLEXOS) is advantageous.
  4. Experience with congestion, transmission rights, resource adequacy, and RPS requirements.
  5. Experience with renewable resources, storage, DERs, and energy efficiency is a plus.
  6. Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  7. Strong problem-solving, judgment, and decision-making skills.
  8. Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
  9. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  10. Proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  11. Business development skills are advantageous.

  • Remote on the West Coast considered
