Job description

Senior Power Electronics Engineer

Senior Power Electronics Engineer reporting to the Director of Power Systems in the SPARC team at CFS. Responsible for leading and coordinating electrical design projects, interfacing with cross‑functional stakeholders, and ensuring a high‑quality design release that meets specifications, project timelines, and budget requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Design, model, simulate, analyze, and validate power electronics circuits, magnetic components, and control strategies for medium voltage power electronic converter systems.
  • Define components and develop technical requirements and specifications for power electronic converter systems and other electrical designs.
  • Develop test methods to qualify designs from concept through final testing and commissioning, including troubleshooting of converter systems.
  • Contribute to cross‑functional technical design activities to design, build, and deliver electrical system designs for fusion power.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams on critical procurement contracts and vendor coordination efforts for project milestones.
  • Define requirements and lead initial commissioning activities for power electronic systems.
  • Document design specifications, simulations, and test results into engineering reports.
Qualifications
  • 8+ years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or a Master’s degree with 6+ years of experience with power electronics‑based systems.
  • Proven track record in design and development (system, protection, control & mechanical integration) of power electronics‑based electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of various inverter circuit topologies and their benefits and limitations.
  • Experience with modeling & simulation using tools such as PLECS, PSPICE, MATLAB, etc.
  • Experience with semiconductor devices (IGBT, MOSFET, etc.) and magnetic components (transformers, inductors, etc.).
  • Fundamental understanding of gate drive circuits, design, and device protection.
  • Experience with packaging design of power conversion equipment and thermal management.
  • Experience with high‑power electrical equipment >10 MW.
  • Hands‑on testing of electrical components, sub‑assemblies, and systems in the laboratory using oscilloscopes and other measurement equipment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to conduct design reviews and present results to both expert and non‑technical audiences.
  • Results‑driven with the ability to embrace and convince stakeholders on design direction changes for high‑quality product release.
  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering with a focus on Power Electronics.
  • Experience in practical application of electrical engineering skills to construction, manufacturing, testing, and field installations.
  • Experience applying compliance standards (IEC, UL, CSA, NEC, etc.) to designs.
  • Experience with problem solving, root cause analysis, and field containment actions.
  • Hands‑on prototype build, prototype testing, and documentation of results is a plus.
  • Experience scaling independent systems to larger systems to meet higher power requirements.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, perform standing/typing/sitting for extended periods, and travel or work nights/weekends/on‑call as needed.
  • Work in a facility with industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.

We value diversity deeply and are proud to be an equal opportunity employer by choice. We consider all qualified applicants equally, regardless of race, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, protected veteran status, religion, physical or mental disability, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or any other basis protected by law.
