Job summary

Clayton County is seeking a Police Training Instructor II to coordinate, supervise, and deliver basic mandate, in-service, and advanced training. The role ensures compliance with federal/state regulations and county statutes, while overseeing instructors and assessing performance in classroom and live drill settings.

The incumbent develops lesson plans, maintains training records, and interfaces with multiple agencies.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must have at least five years as full-time academy staff.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
• Must be at least 21 years old.
• Must be a US Citizen or have resident status.
• POST certification as a law enforcement officer for eight years.
• CPR certification required.
• Must be licensed and qualified to operate a firearm.
• POST Instructor certification for at least five years.
• Must possess POST certifications: Firearms Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, and Emergency Vehicle Instructor.
• May be required to attain additional certifications specific to assigned division.
• Physically able to participate in defensive tactic training and related activities.

Responsibilities

• Supervises, directs, evaluates, and counsels staff; handles performance appraisals.
• Coordinates and instructs basic mandate, in-service, and advanced training; ensures compliance with regulations.
• Demonstrates defensive tactics and weapons in classroom and live drills; enforces safety rules.
• Oversees student and adjunct instructors; recommends corrective actions.
• Prepares lesson plans and teaching aids; writes training bulletins and newsletters.
• Researches and develops new training courses; plans long-term course offerings.
• Maintains training records and administers POST entrance exams; scores exams.
• Maintains computerized training records and data entry.
• Evaluates new products and equipment for training relevance.
• Monitors radio transmissions; responds to calls and coordinates actions.
• Interacts with staff, the public, media, and other agencies; mediates conflicts.
• Collaborates with various departments; investigates complaints against subordinates.
• Keeps knowledge of laws/regulations up to date; reads professional literature.
• Attends meetings and training; may serve on panels or committees.
• Completes and processes forms, logs, and reports; maintains files.
