Qualifications

  • Collaborates with various departments; investigates complaints against subordinates.
  • Keeps knowledge of laws/regulations up to date; reads professional literature.
  • Attends meetings and training; may serve on panels or committees.
  • Completes and processes forms, logs, and reports; maintains files.

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: POLICE TRAINING INSTRUCTOR II
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to coordinate, supervise, and perform technical and administrative duties associated with instruction of basic mandate, in-service, and advanced/specialized training, to ensure compliance with applicable training requirements, and to enforce all county statutes, ordinances and the laws and regulations of the state.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinates and instructs all levels of basic mandate, in-service, and advanced/specialized training courses; ensures compliance with educational criteria established by applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Demonstrates various defensive tactics, weapons, and administrative responsibilities of police officers in a classroom setting and in live drills; enforces all safety rules during training.
  • Oversees activities and observes performance of students and adjunct instructors; reviews and discusses activities, problems, and any mistakes, safety and precautionary concerns; recommends methods for corrective action.
  • Prepares training lesson plans and related teaching aids for classroom presentations; writes departmental training bulletins and newsletters.
  • Researches, develops, and writes new training courses; prepares long range planning for course offerings; updates, maintains current course content.
  • Initiates, maintains, and upgrades training performance records of personnel attending classes; administers Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) entrance exam; scores examinations to determine pass/fail grades.
  • Maintains computerized records of training activities; enters/retrieves training information and other data to/from computer system.
  • Researches, tests, and evaluates new products and equipment relative to police training which may include firearms, ammunition and components, holsters, and related gear; submits recommendations.
  • Monitors radio transmissions to ensure all calls are answered; responds to calls of serious nature and to scene of subordinates' calls to answer questions, authorize actions, take control of situation, and serve as a back-up unit.
  • Responds to questions, complaints, and requests for information from students, the general public, news media, civic organizations, officers, employees, and other individuals; mediates conflicts with citizens and officers.
  • Exchanges information with dispatchers, attorneys, court personnel, fire and EMT personnel, medical examiner, medical professionals, and other departments and agencies; investigates complaints against subordinates.
  • Reviews documents processed by subordinates to ensure accuracy; reviews previously assigned cases with officers.
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws/regulations; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations.
  • Attends shift and supervisory meetings, seminars, and specialized/update training sessions as appropriate; may serve on panels, boards, and/or committees.
  • Completes, prepares, and/or approves a variety of forms, logs, requests, records, reports, correspondence, and other documents associated with daily responsibilities of this position; reviews, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate; prepares and maintains files and administrative records.
  • Cooperate with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and their officers or representatives when activities are related to investigations within county jurisdiction.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
  • Maintains and oversees maintenance of law enforcement vehicle; requests service and/or repairs as needed; maintains weapons and equipment in functional and presentable condition.
  • Answers the telephone; provides information, advice and guidance; takes and relays messages and/or direct calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
  • Substitutes for other supervisors and/or co-workers in temporary absence of same; performs other administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must have served as full time academy staff for a minimum of five (5) years.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be a US Citizen or resident status.
  • Must be Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified as a law enforcement officer for eight (8) years.
  • Must be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Must be licensed and qualified to operate a firearm.
  • Must be certified as a POST Instructor for a minimum of five (5) years.
  • Must also possess the following POST certifications: Firearms Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, and Emergency Vehicle Instructor.
  • May be required to attain and maintain additional certifications specific to assigned division.
  • Must be physically able to participate in defensive tactic training scenarios and in all aspects of physical training required of mandate recruits.
  • May be required to pass a physical agility test.

NOTE: This is an assigned position at the discretion of the Police Chief.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on walking, running, climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
