Job summary

City of St. Charles is seeking a Community Development – Building Services inspector to ensure plumbing and mechanical systems meet applicable codes. You will inspect systems, review plans, and work with contractors, property owners and city staff to support safe, code-compliant construction.

The role requires a licensed journeyman plumber with 5+ years of experience; CDL is preferred. The position includes a 24/7 on-call rotation and comprehensive benefits as part of municipal employment.

Qualifications

• Minimum five years as a licensed journeyman plumber with diverse project experience.
• Valid Illinois State or City of Chicago Plumber's License.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation with 60-minute response time.
• Class A CDL, or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
• No or minimal physical limitations; ability to lift up to 20 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Inspect new and repaired plumbing, water, gas, sewer, heating, and related piping systems for code compliance.
• Review and approve water and sewer service taps, witness testing, and maintain records.
• Explain inspection findings to contractors, tenants, and property owners; interpret codes.
• Lead reviews of permit applications for plumbing, mechanical, and utility permits.
• Conduct plan reviews and provide technical guidance on plumbing and mechanical codes.
• Respond to emergencies to support other departments and snow removal when needed.
