Job summary

City of St. Charles is seeking a Code Enforcement Officer in the Community Development department. The role ensures compliance with property maintenance codes, zoning codes, and city ordinances through inspections and enforcement actions.

Ideal candidates will have related technical training, several years of building/construction experience, and certification requirements; valid driver's license is essential. This exempt on-site position offers full-time hours and comprehensive city benefits.

Qualifications

• Vocational or technical training in building codes or related areas.
• Minimum of three years general building construction or related experience.
• Property Maintenance certification required within 6 months of hire date.
• A valid driver's license required.
• ICC Residential Building Inspector certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Inspect new structures and existing structures for property maintenance codes and city ordinance.
• Inform and advise the public, contractors, property owners, developers regarding inspection activities and requirements.
• Verify and document code violations.
• Notify builders, contractors, homeowners, tenants and business owners of code violations.
• Perform follow-up inspections for corrected violations.
• Receive and respond to code violation complaints.
• Maintain records of inspection activity.
• Act as liaison to other City Departments and agencies.
• Coordinate inspection functions with otherCity Departments and agencies.
• Issue citations, manage court cases, and provide testimony to Municipal Court.
• Efficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and other typical office software.

Education

Vocational or technical training in building codes, zoning codes, property maintenance enforcement, building inspections, building trades or related area

Three years general building construction or related experience

Property Maintenance certification within 6 months of hire

ICC Residential Building Inspector certification preferred
