Job summary

OpenBet is seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to design, build, and own our on-premises infrastructure, with growing cloud integration. You will partner with DevOps, SRE, and Database Engineering to keep hybrid estate reliable, secure, and audit-ready, covering virtualization, Linux, storage, and DR.

You will lead automation efforts using Ansible, Python, and PowerCLI, and contribute to security, monitoring, and incident response in a fast-paced, regulated betting environment.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of hands-on experience designing and operating on-premises infrastructure, including data centre, server hardware, and enterprise storage (SAN/NAS).
• Deep expertise with VMware virtualization (vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, clustering, and virtual networking).
• Strong Linux system administration skills.
• Strong automation skills with Ansible and scripting in Python, Bash, PowerCLI.
• Knowledge of networking fundamentals and collaboration with network engineers.
• Experience with high availability, backup, and disaster recovery for virtualized workloads.
• Experience contributing to security and compliance audits with documentation and access governance.
• Experience with monitoring and alerting tools and on-call environments.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate on-premises virtual infrastructure (vSphere, vCenter, ESXi) and own lifecycle.
• Manage server estate hardware lifecycle, firmware, OOB management, Linux build standards, patching, troubleshooting.
• Operate on-premises storage platforms, capacity planning, tiering, performance tuning, and lifecycle.
• Design and implement HA and DR for virtualized workloads; coordinate with Infrastructure Manager.
• Build infrastructure automation with Ansible; use scripting (Python, Bash, PowerCLI) and version control.
• Collaborate with DevOps, SRE, Database Eng, and Network Eng for hybrid integration.
• Develop monitoring, alerting, and capacity dashboards; support incident response.
• Maintain security/hardening at hypervisor/OS level; manage access controls for compliance.
• Maintain audit documentation, runbooks, access records, and evidence of controls.
• Support database infra (storage, HA, backups) with DB Eng; work with Network Eng.
• Lead infrastructure projects (refreshes, migrations, DR exercises) and participate in on-call rota.

The Goal

What will your role be?

We're looking for a Senior Platform Engineer to join the team that designs, builds, and owns our on-premises infrastructure. You'll be part of the technical backbone behind the platforms that keep our betting and gaming systems running reliably around the clock, from compute, virtualization, and storage through to security and resilience. You'll work closely with DevOps, SRE and Database Engineering to keep our hybrid on-premises and cloud estate reliable, secure, and audit-ready.

This role is focused on our on-premises platform today and is designed to grow. As more of our workloads integrate with cloud, you will take on increasing ownership of our hybrid infrastructure, with the support and development to get you there.

What you'll be doing

• Virtualization: Design, build, and operate our on-premises virtual infrastructure (vSphere, vCenter, ESXi), owning its lifecycle, patching, capacity, and technical roadmap.

• Compute and operating systems: Manage the server estate, including hardware lifecycle, firmware, out-of-band management, and Linux build standards, patching, and troubleshooting.

• Storage: Operate on-premises storage platforms covering tiering, performance tuning, capacity planning, and lifecycle management, and shape the wider storage strategy.

• Resilience: Design and implement high availability and disaster recovery for virtualised workloads (clustering, replication, backup, and regular recovery testing), working with the Infrastructure Manager on sign-off.

• Automation: Build and improve infrastructure automation, primarily with Ansible, supported by scripting (Python, Bash, PowerCLI) and version-controlled workflows, to reduce manual operations and improve reliability.

• Hybrid and AWS: Work with DevOps on hybrid connectivity and workload integration between on-premises and cloud.

• Observability: Build and maintain monitoring, alerting, and capacity dashboards for the platform, partnering with SRE on service health and incident response.

• Security and compliance: Implement and maintain hardening standards at the hypervisor and OS level, manage access and privileged-access controls, and keep the estate compliant with the regulatory and security frameworks that apply to regulated betting operations.

• Audit readiness: Maintain documentation, runbooks, access control records, and evidence of controls, and support internal and external audits.

• Database infrastructure: Provide infrastructure-level support for our database platforms (storage performance, HA configuration, and backup infrastructure) in close collaboration with Database Engineering.

• Networking: Work alongside Network Engineering on connectivity, segmentation, and firewall changes that affect the platform, and troubleshoot across the compute, storage, and network boundary.

• Data centre operations: Support physical infrastructure management, capacity planning, environmental monitoring, and cabling standards.

• Operations and leadership: Take part in the on-call rota and incident response, follow change management processes, mentor other engineers, and lead infrastructure projects such as refreshes, migrations, and DR exercises.

The Player

What you'll bring:

• 6+ years of hands‑on experience designing and operating on‑premises infrastructure, including data centre, server hardware, and enterprise storage (SAN/NAS)

• Deep expertise with VMware virtualization (vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, clustering, and virtual networking), or comparable enterprise virtualization experience

• Strong Linux system administration skills

• Strong automation skills, with proven production experience using Ansible, plus scripting ability in Python, Bash and PowerCLI.

• Working knowledge of networking fundamentals (L2/L3, VLANs, routing, firewalls, VPN, load balancing) and the ability to collaborate effectively with network engineers

• Experience with high availability, backup, and disaster recovery for virtualized and database workloads

• Experience contributing to security and compliance audits, with an eye for documentation, access governance, and hardening

• Experience with monitoring and alerting tooling, and comfort working in an on‑call, incident‑driven environment

• A collaborative mindset and the confidence to work cross‑functionally with DevOps, SRE, Database Engineering, and Network Engineering

Desirable

• Hands‑on AWS experience (EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, Direct Connect / Site‑to‑Site VPN), or a clear motivation to grow into a hybrid role

• Infrastructure as Code experience (e.g. Terraform) and Git‑based workflows or CI/CD pipelines

• Experience with enterprise backup platforms

• Familiarity with storage networking (iSCSI, FC, NVMe‑oF), or containers and Kubernetes

• Relevant certifications, such as VMware VCP, RHCE, or AWS Solutions Architect / SysOps

• Fluent English (written and spoken)
