Job summary

Carlsmed is seeking a Principal Software Architect to lead architectural strategy for our spine surgery platform and related systems. You will define scalable architectures, guide key technical decisions, and mentor engineers across the organization.

You will partner with engineering and senior leadership to align technical strategy with business goals, drive innovation, and ensure high-quality, performant software across distributed services.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• 10–15 years of software system experience, including 5+ years leading teams.
• Experience with spine or orthopedics highly desired.
• Excellent verbal and written communication.
• Advanced React architecture and performance optimization.
• Deep expertise in Node.js and distributed systems.

Responsibilities

• Define and drive the technical vision and roadmap for the platform.
• Design scalable architectures for distributed systems.
• Establish standards and best practices across the org.
• Lead architectural reviews and governance.
• Mentor senior engineers and technical leads.
• Drive technology choices impacting the organization.
• Collaborate with leadership to align technical strategy with business goals.
• Identify and mitigate technical risks.
• Guide teams in Node.js microservices architecture.
• Design and govern GraphQL schema across services.
• Establish scalable React patterns and component libraries.
• Architect PostgreSQL solutions for high-scale apps.
• Define API standards and integration patterns.
• Lead PoC initiatives for new technologies.
• Drive spikes to validate architectural decisions.
