Job summary

City of Mount Vernon seeks a Senior Planner to coordinate long- and short-range planning projects and oversee specialized planning functions for development proposals. This role requires strong project management, analysis, and public engagement skills.

Essential duties include reviewing project submissions, preparing staff reports, attending public meetings, and ensuring code compliance. A bachelor’s degree in urban planning and five years of experience are required, with competitive benefits

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Urban or Regional Planning or related field with five years of progressively responsible planning experience.
• Experience coordinating multiple planning projects and staff is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal planning laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Oversees and coordinates investigation, analysis and preparation of planning documents and reports.
• Reviews project submissions and provides guidance to applicants and staff.
• Conducts research on economic and environmental impacts of proposed developments.
• Reads technical reports and verifies code compliance; drafts amendments and plan materials.
• Attends meetings and presents information to City Council and Planning Commission.
• Communicates with the public and officials on policy issues and land use matters.
• Conducts project site visits and assists with interpretations of City codes.
• Responds to records requests and supports city departments with research.
