Job summary

The City of Virginia Beach's Department of Planning & Community Development is seeking a Senior Planner to join the Current Planning team. You will facilitate discretionary applications and coordinate multi-party development reviews through Planning Commission and City Council actions.

Ideal candidates will interpret city ordinances, research land-use requirements, and communicate objectives clearly to developers, investors, attorneys, and city staff, while supporting policy development across

Qualifications

• Experience in public and/or private municipal/government setting.
• Experience working directly with appointed Boards & Commissions on development applications.
• Experience interpreting and researching Codes & Ordinances.
• Site development plan review and project management experience.
• Experience with meeting facilitation and public presentations.
• Work/Coordination experience with multidisciplinary design teams, to include developers, engineers, architects, etc.
• Supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

• Provide recommendations and comments to Planning bodies, boards, commissions, and the public on planning topics.
• Review and facilitate complex discretionary applications (rezonings, variances, CUPs, and street closures) and present to Planning Commission.
• Prepare City Council agenda forms transmitting Planning Commission recommendations.
• Coordinate and supervise staff reviewing discretionary applications and site plans for compliance with ordinances and adopted plans.
• Coordinate compilation of comments from reviewing City agencies on land use applications.
• Research information for Boards, Commissions and City Council agendas.
• Provide information and support regarding the development review process to the public and staff.
• Prepare reports and studies on development review topics.
• Meet with developers, investors, attorneys, and executives to advise on development within city policies.
• Serve on City committees as a department representative.
• Coordinate policy development and problem solving among City departments.
• Assist the Planning Evaluation Coordinator as requested in Current Planning coordination.
