Job summary

HyperLight Corporation is seeking a Staff or Senior Staff Photonics Design Engineer to lead high-performance optical interface component design on the TFLN platform in Cambridge, MA. You will own end-to-end design flows, drive robust optimization methods, and collaborate across process, test, and product teams to deliver scalable photonics solutions.

The role requires a Ph.D. in EE/Physics/Optics or equivalent industry experience, with extensive hands-on design and tapeout experience.

Qualifications

• PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics, or related field with 3+ years industry experience or 9+ years with BS/MS
• Prior ownership of photonic component design flows with multiple tapeouts and characterizations
• Strong expertise in optimization-driven design and statistical modeling, including DOE
• Experience simulating PIC components with Tidy3D, Lumerical, COMSOL, Synopsys OptoDesigner
• Hands-on photonic IC characterization using swept lasers, VNAs, BERTs, oscilloscopes; scripting in Python/Julia

Responsibilities

• Lead the design of high-performance optical interfaces and components such as grating/edge couplers, splitters and thermo-optic phase shifters
• Own end-to-end component design flows: requirements, architectures, simulation, tapeout, measurement, production handoff
• Apply optimization-driven and statistical design to ensure fabrication robustness and high-volume yield
• Simulate designs using Tidy3D, Lumerical, COMSOL, HFSS and in-house Python tools
• Develop measurement techniques to characterize performance and analyze data from measurements and simulations
• Collaborate with process engineering to improve fabrication processes and mentor other engineers
• Serve as a technical expert guiding engineering decisions and roadmaps
• Exceptional candidates finishing a Ph.D. with directly relevant tapeout experience considered
