Job summary

HyperLight in Cambridge, MA seeks a Staff or Senior Staff Photonics Design Engineer to lead device component design on the TFLN Chiplet platform, focusing on optical interfaces. You’ll own end-to-end design flows from requirements to tapeout and production, collaborating with process and product teams.

Qualified candidates have a PhD in EE/Physics/Optics or 9+ years in industry, plus strong skills in photonic design, simulation, and data analysis.

Qualifications

• PhD in EE/Physics/Optics or equivalent with 3+ years of industry experience
• Strong background in optimization-driven design and statistical modeling
• Hands-on photonic IC characterization with swept lasers, VNAs, BERTs, and probes
• Experience writing Python or Julia scripts for data analysis and tooling
• Prior ownership of photonic component design flows through tapeout and testing

Responsibilities

• Lead design of high‑performance photonic components, including grating and edge couplers
• Own design flows end to end: requirements, architectures, simulation, tapeout, and production handoff
• Apply optimization‑driven and statistical design to ensure fabrication robustness
• Simulate designs using Tidy3D, Lumerical, COMSOL, HFSS, and Python tools
• Develop measurement techniques to characterize performance and analyze data
• Collaborate with process engineering to optimize fabrication for device performance
• Mentor engineers; guide roadmap and key engineering decisions
• Exceptional candidates finishing a Ph.D. with directly relevant design and tapeout experience will also be considered
