Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking an experienced phlebotomist to verify requisitions, perform venipuncture and finger sticks, and ensure specimen integrity. The role requires meticulous attention to detail, strong communication, and adherence to safety and regulatory standards.

Applicants should have at least 5 years in phlebotomy, a BS/BA (preferred) or at minimum a high school diploma, and a state-required phlebotomy certificate. Ongoing professional development is encouraged.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of phlebotomy experience.
  • BS/BA degree preferred by employer.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Phlebotomy Certificate (if required by State)

Responsibilities

  • Verify test requisitions by cross-checking with nursing station logs and flag discrepancies.
  • Identify patient by reading patient ID before sample collection.
  • Collect blood specimens via venipuncture or finger sticks.
  • Maintain specimen integrity using aseptic technique and following dept. procedures.
  • Track specimens with dates, times, and initials; keep daily tallies.
  • Record results and monitor quality-control logs; report changes as needed.
  • Maintain a safe, compliant work environment following standards and regulations.
  • Resolve unusual orders by contacting physicians or lab staff for clarification.
  • Pursue ongoing education and professional networking to stay current.
  • Collaborate with PHI handling and using applicable technology to access data.

Job description

Job Responsibilities
  • Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with nursing station log; brings discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel.
  • Verifies patient by reading patient identification.
  • Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks.
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures.
  • Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintains daily tallies of collections performed.
  • Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality‑control log; identifying and reporting needed changes.
  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
  • Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • Enhances phlebotomy department and hospital reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Works with PHI on a regular basis both in paper and electronic form and has access to various technologies to access PHI in order to perform the job.
