Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Senior Chemical Process Engineer for a major petrochemical client in Welkom, Free State. You will optimize existing production processes, support safety and environmental compliance, and lead cross-functional teams to drive technical improvements.

The role emphasizes process simulation, troubleshooting, and implementing new technologies, with opportunities for professional growth and exposure to capital projects within a well-established organization.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from an accredited university.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in process engineering within petrochemical or related industry.
• Experience with process simulation software such as Aspen HYSYS or PRO/II.
• Strong understanding of unit operations, thermodynamics, and reaction kinetics.
• Experience with Process Safety Management (PSM) and PHA methodologies (HAZOP, What-If).
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to present technical information.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Registered Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng.) designation is highly desirable.
• Must be based in or willing to relocate to Welkom, Free State.

Responsibilities

• Lead process design, analysis, and optimization for large-scale petrochemical facilities.
• Develop and execute P&ID upgrades, process simulations, and material/energy balances.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex operational issues impacting plant performance, safety, and environmental compliance.
• Conduct feasibility studies and economic evaluations for process modifications and new equipment.
• Collaborate with project engineering teams on the design and implementation of capital projects.
• Develop and refine Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ensure adherence to best practices.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance to operational staff.
• Participate in Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) and ensure implementation of safety recommendations.
• Monitor process KPIs and identify opportunities for efficiency gains and cost reduction.
• Stay updated on new technologies and industry trends relevant to petrochemical processing.
