Job summary

Controller's Group, Inc. is seeking a hands-on payroll professional to own end-to-end processing of domestic payroll in a hybrid San Francisco setting. You will work with ADP and HR to ensure accurate and timely payroll across multiple jurisdictions.

The ideal candidate has 7+ years of multi-state payroll experience, strong Excel skills, and a proactive approach to process automation and control. Responsibilities include close processes, journal entries, audits, and providing payroll analytics

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field preferred.
  • Certified Payroll Professional credential preferred.
  • 7+ years of hands on multi state payroll experience required.
  • Strong proficiency with ADP Workforce Now is required.
  • Strong understanding of multi-state payroll laws and regulations required.
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end payroll processing for US employee populations, including full-time, part-time and international transfers.
  • Review payroll transactions: salary changes, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other earnings or deductions.
  • Audit benefit premiums and 401K deposits; ensure accurate calculation of deductions.
  • Perform monthly, quarterly, and yearly close processes and payroll account reconciliations.
  • Prepare, review, submit, or adjust payroll entries for posting.
  • Conduct payroll tax research across federal, state, and local levels.
  • Manage audits for Workers Compensation, 401K Plan and other annual financial audits.
  • Collaborate with ADP to ensure compliance with payroll laws and internal policy updates.

Job description

Do you like managing the payroll process but not people? Are you driven by the idea of all things payroll. Our client is looking for a hands on, passionate payroll professional to own the end to end processing of their domestic payroll. The ideal candidate will be strong technical and operationally and have a strong desire for process automation and efficiency. The company is a 300 employee private life science organization and this role would require a hybrid work culture with 3 days a week in the office.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Own end-to-end payroll processing for US employee populations, including full-time employees, part-time employees and international transfers.
  • Ensure timely, accurate payroll processing across multiple jurisdictions. Review all payroll transactions, including salary changes, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and any other earnings or deductions related to payroll.
  • Ensure benefit premiums are calculating correctly and audit flexible spending account and 401K deposits.
  • Perform monthly, quarterly, and yearly close processes, including preparation of journal entries, and payroll account reconciliations to support monthly close cycle timelines.
  • Prepare, review, submit, or adjust payroll entries for approval and posting.
  • Perform tax research on a variety of federal, state, and local issues as needed, including during acquisitions of new States.
  • Manage audits for Workers Compensation, 401K Plan and other annual financial audits.
  • Conduct periodic compliance reviews of ADP data.
  • Work with ADP to ensure compliance with any payroll law changes and internal policy updates.
  • Provides information for monthly key performance indicators. And any other ad-hoc reports needed.
  • Assist in ad-hoc analysis of data.
  • Reconciles and reviews payroll reports and provides data for related general ledger accounts.
  • Seeks operational improvements aimed at service performance and enhanced cost effectiveness in collaboration with HR.
  • Provides strategic guidance to Management regarding potential improvements to payroll policies and procedures.
  • Work closely with the administrator that manages the compliance of the third-party payroll provider.
  • Provide training to new hires on the payroll timeline.
  • Provide internal customer support to employees for any payroll related questions.
  • Provide documentation support to the Legal team for any employment related matters.
  • Complete other accounting/payroll duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field preferred.
  • Certified Payroll Professional credential preferred.
  • Prior experience and strong proficiency with ADP Workforce Now is required.
  • 7+ years of hands on multi state payroll experience required
  • Strong understanding of multi-state payroll laws and regulations is required.
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-starter with a positive outlook and motivated attitude.
  • Thorough understanding of accounting and the GL close process, with experience preparing and posting all payroll and benefit related journal entries.
  • Completes assignments on time and with a high degree of accuracy and completeness.
  • Ability to handle fast paced environment with multiple priorities and constantly changing workload.
  • Competent Microsoft Office user (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook) with a focus on advanced Excel skills.
