Job summary

Xero is seeking a Lead Engineer for the Payments Platform to own architecture and drive delivery of high-throughput, reliable backend services. You will work on design, proofs of concept, and production systems that power money movement and global bill payments for small businesses.

You will collaborate with product, design, and cross-functional teams to define technology direction, enforce security and reliability, and mentor engineers as the team grows.

Qualifications

• Proven track record delivering highly available distributed backend systems.
• Experience building platforms from early ideas into production.
• Deep understanding of system architecture, API design, and databases (SQL/NoSQL).
• Hands-on with production code and architecture decisions.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical direction for the payments platform area, from design to production and on-call.
• Lead architecture, API design and technology decisions with end-to-end accountability.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to turn business needs into resilient engineering solutions.
• Shape engineering practices and standards for the team to improve quality and delivery.
