Description

The Litigation Support Team at Leidos currently supporting the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in Los Angeles, CA has an opening for a Senior Paralegal to work in a downtown Los Angeles, CA DOJ office performing litigation support duties via said role. This is an exciting opportunity to use your experience helping the U.S. Department of Justice achieve their mission.

Overtime and travel may be required as needed with proper authorization. Individual may support any division/section within depending on the needs of the office at time of hire.

Typical assignments may include the following but not limited to:

  1. Performs specialized legal research and writing in support of work in assigned area of criminal or civil prosecution, including research and analysis of statutes, legislative intent, judicial precedents, agency rules and regulations, and law review articles as they related to assigned cases to include those of an especially complex or unprecedented nature.
  2. Utilizes a variety of automated resources to research case or program specific legal matters, and to participate in assigned areas of criminal or civil proceedings, e.g., electronic discovery.
  3. Assists in the development of case referrals by ensuring that referrals meet agency and USAO standards for litigation; reviewing and evaluating referrals to determine the need for additional information and evidence, and planning a comprehensive approach to obtain this information and evidence; assisting the assigned attorney(s) regarding the merits and weaknesses of specific referrals based upon applicable law, evidence of liability and damages, and potential defenses; helping the USAO develop new referrals, by ensuring a good working relationship with client agencies and the public, and by assisting in training for federal, state, and local agencies in the assigned area, preparing informational literature, etc.
  4. Performs a variety of tasks associated with litigation of cases in assigned specialty area including: receiving and analyzing incoming pleadings and correspondence; determining appropriate action and notes time limitations for responses; drafting correspondence and legal documents for attorney’s signature; drafting proposed orders and decrees for signature of judges and magistrates.
  5. Assists in pretrial preparation by: preparing, scheduling, reviewing, and organizing discovery; notifying, interviewing, and managing witnesses; researching case law; supporting assigned attorney(s) in court proceedings by briefing attorney on pertinent facts, issues, and case law, and by compiling, organizing, and indexing exhibits.

The above mentioned duties may be performed as single functions or in combination with one another. One is expected to perform Senior Paralegal duties as defined by the contract.

The pay for this position will be $30.10/hr.

Basic Qualifications:

  1. Requires paralegal certificate, or Juris Doctorate, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study.
  2. 2+ years of litigation paralegal experience or project experience (as related to the task order).
  3. At least one year of experience in automated litigation support.
  4. Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court system, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.
  5. Requires thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.
  6. Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
  7. Hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
  8. Must be a US Citizen and able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience working in a Government and/or Litigation Support environment in conjunction with basic qualifications, valued.
  2. Trial experience very helpful.
  3. Experience with Relativity or similar applications, preferred.
  4. Current or active clearance.

This position is covered under the Service Contract Act and is subject to minimum requirements. Leidos ensures that all provisions are satisfied. The pay for this position will be $30.10/hr.
