Job summary

FSA Federal is seeking a Paralegal/Legal Assistant IV to support the United States Attorney's Office and the Asset Forfeiture Section. You will review reports, prepare pleadings, and coordinate with forfeiture attorneys in federal cases.

This mission-driven role requires strong research, organizational skills, and proficiency with Microsoft Office. U.S. citizenship and a willingness to obtain the required background investigation are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Paralegal Studies or an undergraduate degree with a Paralegal Certificate or a Paralegal Certificate with at least two-years' paralegal experience; or a High School Diploma/GED with at least four-years' paralegal experience

Responsibilities

• Reviews investigative reports for probable cause and plans a comprehensive approach to obtain needed information and evidence.
• Receives, examines, and evaluates new and complex cases referred for judicial forfeiture proceedings to determine case litigation worthiness and relevant authority.
• Prepares legal pleadings to start judicial forfeiture proceedings and motions; drafts of legal memoranda/briefs for the forfeiture attorney.
• Confers with the forfeiture attorney regarding merits and likely success of forfeiture; considers strengths and weaknesses of probable cause and defenses.
• Assists in pretrial preparations; organizes discovery; interviews witnesses; researches case law.
• Uses databases and programs to extrapolate data for reports and exhibits; assists in preparing court proceedings with indexed evidentiary exhibits.
• Researches case law and public information databases; participates in criminal or civil proceedings; interviews federal agents regarding probable cause and evidence availability.
• Supports attorney in communicating agency positions and proposed settlements; prepares documents for settlements or court pleadings for forfeiture; prepares summaries for transcripts.
• Assists third parties or lien holders seeking remission or mitigation of forfeiture; may supervise other employees.
