At Houston Methodist, the Senior Outpatient Coder is responsible for accurately assigning diagnostic and procedure codes to day surgery and observation encounters based on documentation within the electronic medical record, while ensuring compliance with rules and regulatory guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

1. Interact effectively with the coding team and stakeholders.
2. Participate in coding meetings and education, providing feedback and sharing knowledge.
3. Respond promptly to coding requests and review accounts for accuracy.
4. Query physicians for clarification as needed.
5. Assign codes to high-complexity encounters, maintaining quality standards.
6. Review medical records and abstract data accurately into systems.
7. Comply with AHIMA ethical coding standards and guidelines.
8. Maintain productivity and accuracy standards.
9. Support organizational goals for accounts receivable.
10. Continuously evaluate and improve performance and coding quality.

Qualifications

• Associate's degree or higher in a relevant accredited program, or equivalent experience.
• At least three years of outpatient coding experience or completion of Houston Methodist's transition program.
• Certifications such as RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, or CPC.
