Job summary

NYC Outward Bound Schools seeks a Lead Instructor to guide outdoor adventures and youth programming across sites in NYC and Fishkill, NY. The role includes belaying, course planning, and supporting fellow instructors in delivering engaging, safe learning experiences.

You will work both outdoors and at our HQ in Long Island City, with a seasonal schedule and overnight components. Training and certifications are provided to ensure excellence in instruction.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older.
• Commitment to educational equity for BIPOC youth.
• Able to carry, lift, and move minimum 50 pounds for up to five miles per day.
• Able to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Ability to obtain required outdoor certifications upon hire.

Responsibilities

• Participate in course planning and develop lessons, logistics, and activity progressions.
• Provide guidance, mentorship, and on-site support to Instructors while modeling best practices.
• Instruct experiential education and overnight programs with a safe, inclusive environment.
• Assess risk and adjust programming to ensure participant safety.
• Attend trainings, safety certifications, and professional development.
• Manage program documentation and debriefs; support admissions and logistics as needed.
