Job summary

ASME in Corning, NY is seeking a Staff Scientist or Senior Staff Scientist in Precision Mechanical / Optomechanical Systems to advance optical connectivity solutions for AI and HPC. This role blends hands-on design with technical leadership across teams to move complex hardware from concept to manufacturing.

You will lead design of precision components, perform tolerance analysis, and mentor engineers while collaborating with research, development, and manufacturing partners at Sullivan Park.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. with 2+ years of industry experience, or MS with 5+ years, or BS with 7+ years.
• Experience in precision mechanical systems or optomechanics.
• Strong background in tolerance analysis and alignment-sensitive systems.
• Experience with CAD, modeling, and engineering analysis tools.
• Experience with optical modeling tools such as Zemax, Code V, LightTools.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and development of precision optomechanical components and assemblies.
• Translate complex needs into practical design and execution decisions.
• Drive alignment, tolerance fabrication, assembly, and integration solutions.
• Partner with multidisciplinary teams across R&D, engineering, and manufacturing.
• Provide technical leadership and de-risk programs through analysis and prototyping.
• Move technologies from concept through prototype, validation, and scalable implementation.
• Communicate effectively across teams and build long-term capability.
