Job summary

Divergent is seeking a Staff Opto‑Mechanical Engineer to own the optical and opto‑mechanical systems of our L‑PBF platform. You will improve optical performance, reliability, calibration, and long‑term system capability across multiple disciplines.

You will lead complex investigations, drive design improvements, and define future printer architectures while mentoring engineers and coordinating with software, controls, service, and manufacturing teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and 7+ years of engineering experience.
• Experience owning or leading the development of complex optical or opto‑mechanical systems.
• Strong understanding of geometry optics and laser system fundamentals.
• Experience designing precision mechanical hardware for optical alignment and stability.
• Proficient in 3D CAD, GD&T, tolerance analysis, and engineering drawings.
• Hands‑on experience with optical alignment, calibration, characterization, and error budgeting.
• Ability to lead across disciplines and mentor engineers.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a technical authority for printer optics and beam‑delivery systems.
• Own system performance, reliability, calibration, and critical optical hardware.
• Lead root‑cause investigations on focus, spot size, scan field, and stability.
• Translate issues into structured investigations and durable design actions.
• Develop optical error budgets, calibration strategies, and validation methods.
• Decide on calibration, hardware changes, or architectural redesign to fix performance.
• Plan optical characterization, DOE, testing, and system validation.
• Hands‑on assembly, alignment, calibration, and troubleshooting of optical systems.
• Collaborate with software, controls, service, and process teams for print consistency.
• Work with manufacturing and suppliers to improve robustness and fleet performance.
• Identify optical architecture limitations and define improvements for future printers.
• Establish reusable engineering standards, design practices, and testing methods.
• Mentor engineers and lead cross‑functional technical decisions.
