Job summary

Carbon3D is seeking an optomechanical engineer for the Continuous Improvement team in Sunnyvale, CA. The role focuses on optical solutions and sustaining production, collaborating with Mechanical, Electrical, and Systems teams to innovate and solve challenges in a dynamic manufacturing environment.

You will contribute to new product variations and ensure long-term production readiness, with an emphasis on optical alignment, metrology, and quality metrics (GD&T, SPC).

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field; 3+ years in opto-mechanical designs.
  • Strong CAD background; solid understanding of dimensioning/tolerancing; proficiency in SolidWorks.
  • Experience developing specifications for optical/opto-mechanical/optoelectronic assemblies.
  • Knowledge of GD&T, DFMEA, SPC.
  • Experience in optical alignment and metrology.
  • Portfolio included with resume.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Engineering to conceptualize opto-mechanical designs and maintain existing subassemblies, including building/testing optics equipment.
  • Support Operations and cross-functional teams to ensure continued production and troubleshoot issues in assembly and the field.
  • Perform engineering analysis of parts and assemblies including tolerancing, thermal, stress, fatigue, and manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to specify system requirements and document designs for knowledge transfer.
  • Create and maintain documentation (drawings, ECOs, etc.).

As an optomechanical engineer on the Continuous Improvement team, you will help us design, build, and sustain groundbreaking additive manufacturing solutions. This role is focused on our optical solutions and ensuring continuous production.

The Continuous Improvement team has a wide variety of responsibilities, including leading new product introduction (NPI) with Manufacturing, developing new product variations, designing new features for current products, and adapting current products for long-term production in a dynamic manufacturing environment.

As a member of a tight-knit and cross-functional hardware team, you'd contribute ideas and develop practical solutions to an evolving list of never before seen challenges. Your work will help ensure that we deliver great products and delight our customers while changing the world of additive manufacturing.

This is an in office role with 4-5 days expected in office in Sunnyvale California. Flexible working from home is allowed and expected during different phases of our projects.

Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with our Engineering team (Mechanical, Electrical, and Systems), conceptualize opto-mechanical designs and maintain existing subassemblies. This will include working in the lab to build and test optics equipment.
  • Collaborate with Operations, such as Sourcing, Planning, Quality, Manufacturing, Production, and Field Service to support released products, ensure continued production, and troubleshoot issues seen during assembly and in the field. This could include interfacing directly with vendors on technical issues.
  • Perform engineering analysis of parts and assemblies that can include optics mounting strategies, detailed tolerance, thermal, stress, fatigue, lifetime, manufacturability, failure modes, and cost.
  • Collaborate directly with cross functional teams to specify system requirements, implement designs, and troubleshoot issues.
  • Create and maintain documentation (eg. drawings, ECOs, etc) to enable effective knowledge transfer throughout the company.
Skills and requirements:
  • B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical degree. 3+ years of experience working on opto-mechanical designs and sub-systems.
  • A strong mechanical engineering background with fluency in CAD and a solid understanding of dimensioning / tolerancing principles. Proficiency in Solidworks or similar CAD software.
  • Experience developing specifications for optical/opto-mechanical/optoelectronic assemblies.
  • Understanding of product quality metrics and methods including GD&T, DFMEA, Statistical Process Control (SPC).
  • Demonstrated experience in developing systems and processes for optical alignment and metrology for optical elements and optical systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of precision optical/mechanical alignment tools and techniques.

Nice to Have
  • Scripting and UI development expertise for automated alignment tools with motion control, sensors, and/or machine vision components.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB/LabVIEW/Python preferred.
  • Experience in a production environment / comfort working with technicians on the manufacturing floor as well as in the lab.

The compensation bracket for this position is $137,600 - $206,400 (per year). In order to maintain equitable internal pay practices, we aim to hire new employees near the midpoint of$172,000, taking into account your experience, work location, certifications, and the unique skills you bring to the role.
