Job summary

Inversion is recruiting a Staff Optical Engineer to own major optical system elements for high-performance reentry vehicles. You will lead sensor window and seeker design, and develop spectral camera systems from concept through integration and test.

Ideal candidates have 9+ years in optical design, strong imaging experience, and proficiency with Zemax, Code V, and FRED. This in-office role in California requires the ability to obtain a US security clearance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Typically 9+ years designing, analyzing, and testing optical systems.
• Experience with imaging systems and optical design tools.
• Strong understanding of optical materials, coatings and environmental effects.
• Experience planning and performing optical bench or lab testing.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Lead sensor window and seeker design and analysis for flight systems.
• Own spectral camera system architecture, components, integration and trades.
• Perform optical analyses including transmission, image quality and stray light effects.
• Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, avionics, autonomy and test teams to integrate optics.
• Evaluate lenses, detectors, coatings, materials and vendor solutions.
• Plan and execute optical quality measurement tests and validation campaigns.
• Translate test results into recommendations to improve performance and reduce risk.
