Job summary

QuEra Computing Inc. in Boston is seeking a Senior Optical Engineer to serve as a senior individual contributor, driving the design and development of optical and opto-mechanical systems for state-of-the-art neutral atom quantum computers.

The role requires graduate-level education in optics or applied physics and 5–8 years of industry experience in an enterprise engineering environment, with hands-on lab skills and a track record of delivering production-ready instruments.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in optics, optical engineering, applied physics, or a closely related field.
5–8 years of industry experience designing optical and opto-mechanical systems.
Proficiency with Zemax, COMSOL, and CAD for system design.
Experience leading design of scientific instruments and bringing optical systems from concept to production.
Strong hands-on laboratory skills (assembly, alignment, testing).
Experience in ultra-high vacuum environments.

Responsibilities

Architect optical systems and components to support QuEra's neutral atom computers through full development lifecycle.
Advance engineering practices through independent research and continuous improvement initiatives.
Coordinate with the R&D/science team to translate advances into next-generation products.
Troubleshoot technical issues at company headquarters and off-site installations with the local support team.
