Job summary

QuEra Computing Inc. in Boston seeks a Senior Optical Engineer to lead the design and deployment of advanced optical systems for neutral atom quantum computers.

You will work with physicists to architect sub-systems, support full development lifecycle, and translate research into manufacturable products. The role requires a BS in optics or related field (MS/PhD preferred), 5–8 years in industry, and deep hands-on experience in free-space optics, modulators, lasers, and vacuum environments.

Qualifications

• B.S. in optics, optical engineering, applied physics, or a closely related field (Ph.D. or M.S. preferred).
• 5-8 years work experience designing optical and opto-mechanical systems in an industry/enterprise environment.
• Deep domain expertise in free-space optics (free-space and fiber), modulators, electronics, lasers, optical system characterization/testing, and ultra-high vacuum.
• Strong hands-on laboratory skills (assembly, alignment, testing) and experience leading designs from concept to production.

Responsibilities

• Architect optical systems, sub-systems, modules, and components to support neutral atom computers through full development lifecycle (R&D, productization, maintenance).
• Advance engineering practices through independent research and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Coordinate with R&D/science team to translate scientific advances into next-generation products.
• Troubleshoot technical issues at headquarters and customer sites in coordination with local support.
