Job summary

Rochester Precision Optics seeks an Optical Design Engineer to lead design and analysis of precision optical systems from concept to production. You will work with engineering, operations, and QA to create manufacturable, testable solutions that meet customer requirements and cost targets.

The role requires strong optics knowledge, hands-on experience with Zemax Optic Studio, and the ability to perform tolerance analyses and support validation activities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in optics or closely related field required; Master’s preferred.
• Minimum 5 years designing optical systems and lens assemblies in commercial/industrial/defense environments.
• Proficiency with Zemax Optic Studio for design, analysis, tolerancing, and optimization.
• Experience performing optical analysis, tolerancing, sensitivity studies, and optimization.
• Strong understanding of optical performance metrics (MTF, distortion, illumination).

Responsibilities

• Design and develop optical systems and lens assemblies using industry-standard software.
• Perform optical analysis including imaging performance, tolerancing and optimization.
• Develop manufacturable designs balancing performance, cost, producibility and schedule.
• Collaborate with engineering, operations, quality and supply chain for production transition.
• Create, review and approve optical prescriptions, specifications, drawings and reports.
• Support troubleshooting and root-cause investigations of optical performance issues.
• Develop and execute verification and validation plans for performance requirements.
• Support metrology activities including lens characterization and alignment verification.
• Conduct stray light analysis and mitigation using best practices.
• Utilize Zemax and other tools to model and improve system performance.
• Develop scripts and automation to improve design workflows.
