Job summary

Tufts Medical Center in Boston is seeking a dedicated Ophthalmic Technician to support patient care and clinic flow in the Ophthalmology department. The role includes preparing patients for physician evaluation, performing screenings, and assisting with imaging and diagnostic tests essential to eye care.

The candidate should have a high school diploma or equivalent, ophthalmic certification, BLS, and at least two years of technician experience.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant OR Certified Retinal Angiographer is required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or obtain within 3 months of hire.
  • Two years of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares patient for physician evaluation by obtaining medical history including chief complaint, meds, and allergies.
  • Performs screenings and tasks ordered by physician: visual acuity, refractions, keratometry, pupil evaluation, IOP measurement.
  • Performs and assists with diagnostic tests and ocular imaging (OCT, Visual Fields, Fundus Photo, Topography, IOL Master, K5).
  • Performs complex exams including ultrasound (A/B scans) and electrophysiology tests (ERGs, VEPs).
  • Assists with contact lens removal/reinsertion and in-office procedures.
  • Prepares consent forms and assists physician during procedures.
  • Sets up exam rooms, maintains supplies, and educates patients.
  • Documents exam components in EHR and supports clinic flow.
  • Ensures instrument cleaning, disinfection, and equipment maintenance.
  • Assists with triaging or emergency calls and orientations of new technicians.
  • May participate in clinical trials.
