Job summary

The Associate Director of Operations at Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN) leads day-to-day activities at the UC Davis headquarters, coordinating subject matter experts for the rescue, care, and rehabilitation of oiled wildlife and managing program assets. The role also drives initial deployment operations and collaborates with 45 member organizations and 1,600 responders to ensure readiness.

Working closely with the Director and Associate Director of Network Management, this position oversees

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to strategic visioning of the overall program as a senior leadership member of the program.
  • Represent OWCN to stakeholders, including OWCN member organizations, California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response and other state and federal agencies, and to the public as needed.
  • Ensure administrative aspects of the program related to operations are tracked and met, including trainings, rehabilitation and scientific permits, and secure data storage after spill events.
  • Review and monitor budgets and expenditures for the operations portion and ensure appropriate allocation of resources.
  • Supervise the daily activities of OWCN Management Team personnel assigned to operational areas.
  • Lead initial operational efforts for rapid mobilization for oil spill activations, coordinating with the Associate Director of Network Management for activation of member responders.
  • Respond to spills, fill management roles as needed, coordinate with outside stakeholders and member organizations, and operate within ICS as a group supervisor.
  • Supervise operational activities during responses and interface with agencies and volunteers.
  • Provide depth in coverage for the Director and Associate Director of Network Management in preparedness and response times.
  • Manage development and review/maintenance of best practices content for the OWCN and ensure collaboration across subject matter experts.
  • Identify gaps in subject matter areas related to best practices and disseminate new information via research opportunities, publications, and conferences.
  • Support Network training needs and create/deliver content for workshops, webinars, and asynchronous learning.
