Russell Tobin’s client seeks a Senior Ontologist to advance institutional research through ontology and taxonomy development, semantic technologies, and NLP. The role is hybrid (3 days onsite, 2 remote) with a pay rate of $160–$165/hour on a temp-to-perm basis.

A minimum of 5 years in ontologies within finance is expected, with OWL, SPARQL, and SKOS skills. You will maintain the Brokerage Research Ontology and taxonomy, collaborate with data science and data providers, validate ML outputs, and

Senior Ontologist, Institutional Research

Russell Tobin’s client is seeking a highly experienced Senior Ontologist to support institutional research initiatives through ontology and taxonomy development, semantic technologies, and natural language processing.

• Pay Rate: $160–$165/hour
• Employment Type: Temp-to-perm
• Work Arrangement: Hybrid – 3 days onsite and 2 days remote per week

What You’ll Be Doing

• Maintain and enhance the Brokerage Research Ontology (msRo) and Trending Topics Taxonomy.
• Develop definitions for new concepts and entities and coordinate with internal business teams and external reference data providers.
• Partner with business stakeholders to support NLP, ontology, and taxonomy-related projects.
• Translate business requirements into technical specifications and serve as a bridge between business teams and technology partners.
• Validate outputs from LLMs and other machine learning models using testing tools and subject matter expertise.
• Collaborate with data science teams to incorporate quantitative results into unstructured research content.
• Work with technology teams supporting Mondeca to improve named entity recognition (NER) and document tagging.
• Support the accurate application of ontology and taxonomy rules across financial research documents.
• Help improve search accuracy and document tagging within an Elasticsearch index containing hundreds of thousands of financial research reports.
• Educate stakeholders on semantic technologies, ontologies, taxonomies, and relevant industry developments.

What You Bring

• 5+ years of experience applying ontologies and taxonomies, preferably within financial or economic research.
• Advanced hands-on experience with Web Ontology Language (OWL) and SPARQL.
• Experience with SKOS and at least one additional industry ontology; GIST is a plus.
• Strong writing and language skills, with the ability to create clear, accurate, and understandable definitions.
• Familiarity with financial and economic analysis, including company filings, products and services, commodities, industry analysis, and macroeconomics.
• Knowledge of financial market reference data, including tickers, pricing, and corporate ownership hierarchies.
• Familiarity with financial instruments such as equities, bonds, structured products, currencies, and derivatives.
• Experience with NLP techniques, including named entity recognition (NER) and regular expressions.
• Python and/or shell scripting experience, along with familiarity with a major programming language such as Java, C++, or C#.
• Understanding of data science and machine learning concepts.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with financial research content and large-scale document repositories.
• Familiarity with Mondeca, Elasticsearch, and automated document tagging.
• Experience collaborating with business stakeholders, data scientists, and technology teams.
