Job summary

Heartflow is seeking a Staff Application Database Architect to lead OLTP database design and high‑performance data access for our clinical and operational platform on AWS.

This hands‑on role designs schemas, tunes queries, and guides Django ORM usage while ensuring HIPAA, FDA, and GDPR compliance and solid data governance.

Mentor engineers, set data‑architecture standards, and partner with Engineering, IT, Research, and SRE to keep mission‑critical workloads fast and secure.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
• 10+ years of backend/database engineering experience in production web apps.
• Deep OLTP experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL/MySQL/Aurora).
• Strong Python backend data access using ORM (SQLAlchemy/Django ORM).
• Experience with HIPAA, FDA, GDPR compliance and data governance.
• Proven leadership, mentoring, and cross‑team collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and own OLTP databases powering clinical/operational apps.
• Optimize schemas, queries, indexing, and partitioning for high throughput.
• Define ORM strategies and reduce N+1, lazy loading, and contention issues.
• Lead DBA operations: uptime, backups, schema evolution, incident response.
• Model transactional data with clinical domain awareness (patients, studies).
• Contribute to AI/semantic data enrichment and data governance.
